UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application 27, Serial. N0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Manchester, county of Wabash, State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ladys skirt or petticoat, made of silk or other material, and provided at its inner side with a removable washable flounce or lower half of an underskirt. In this way the appearance of two or more skirts is obtained, a desirable fullness at the bottom effected, and any objectionable increase in waist measure avoided. The removable flounce serves further as a guard or protector for the edge of the silk skirt.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a skirt embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a section through part thereof.
The numeral 3 indicates a skirt made preferably of silk. At about knee height there is attached directly to the inner side of the skirt a horizontal tape 4, carrying hooks 5. The skirt 3 incloses the lower half of an underskirt 6, made of washable material and provided at its upper edge with a tape 7, carrying eyes 8, that project above the upper edge of the underskirt, being adapted to be removably engaged by the hooks 5. The length of the underskirt 6 is less than the distance of tape 4 from bottom of skirt 3. Thus when the underskirt is attached to the skirt the latter projects over and conceals the same, the combined garment being of single thickness above the knees, but of double thickness below the same. In this way any undesirable fullness is avoided above the knees, while the appearance and substance of a double skirt is obtained below the knees.
By having the lower edge of the tape 4 free from the skirt and the fastening devices or hooks and eyes arranged to engage at the contiguous edges with one member thereof projecting beyond the edge of the part to which it is attached, the faces of the tape and underskirt are permitted to lie flush and not overlap, and an objectionable bulge is avoided, all of which is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The underskirt 6 is provided at its bottom with two or more flounces 9 l0, that extend to the lower edge of the same and impart the desired fullness to the garment above the foot. If desired, the skirt 3 may be worn without the underskirt 6, and both parts may be separately manufactured and sold.
What I claim ish The combination with a skirt having a tape permanently attached thereto upon the inside thereof and an underskirt detachably supported from said tape and terminating short of the skirt and free of the latter at its lower edge, of fastening devices, one member of each of which is attached to the tape and underskirt, respectively, and projects beyond the edge of the part to which it is attached, whereby the edges of the tape and underkirt will not overlap, substantially as speci- Signed by me at North Manchester, Indiana, this 20th day of April, 1906.
ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER.
