Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
Application filed January 18,1906. Serial No. 296,605.
T @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEDWARD A. HENRY, a
l citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Package- Carriers and Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to improvements lin combined package-carriers and baskets.
The object vof the invention is to provide a device which when open will form a large and strong basket and when folded produce a package-carrier of neat appearance and great carrying capacity.
Another feature resides in ythe construction whereby the device may be readily and leasily converted into either a package-carrier or a basket.
v Finally, the object of the 'invention is to.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my invention opened in basket form, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates oppositely-extending U-shaped frame members which are pivoted near their inner ends to pivot-plates 2 the said plates standing opposite one another and each provided at their upper central portions with outwardlyprojectin lips 3, under which the extreme ends of t e frame members are adapted to engage when the frame is opened out, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Rivets 4, passing through the ends of the frame members and the pivot-plates 2, project inwardly therefrom and receive the lower coiled ends 5 of curved wire handle-hails 6. These handlebails 6 are provided with a suitable covering 7, which produces a substantial handle of neat appearance. At their outer ends the Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical` ysectional view taken onthe line at :c of Fig. 1.
frame members are provided with handles 8, which are suitably connected to lugs 9, proj ecting from the frame members, by rings 10. The body of the device may be formed of any suitable material-such as fabric, canvas, leather, &c. However7 I have found it more desirable to use a suitable cord-netting, which II have illustrated in the drawings at 1 1.
In the position shown in Fi s. 3 and 4 the frame members are opened an extend in the same plane horizontally. The outer ends of the frame members are prevented from drooping and held in place by the contact of their extreme inner ends with the under side of the lips 3. The handle 7 being securely connected to the pivots 4 prevents the basket from accidentally closing and greatly simpliiies the construction. The handles 8 being pivotally connected tothe frame members 1 will hang down, as shown in Fig. 3, thus not interfering with the use of the device as a basket.
When it is desired to use the device as a package-carrier, it is merely necessary to swing the frame members upward and together. The handle 7 being connected to the inner sides of the pivot-plates `2 will thus stand within the frame members to all purposes concealed and out of the way, while the andles 8 provide means for carrying the car- Y as readily be converted into a basket by simply swinging the frame members downward.
What I claim is- 1. In a combined package-carrier and basket, the combination with a body portion, of a foldable frame, handles connected to each end of the frame,. and a handle connected with the frame and ada ted to stand therein when the frame isfolde 2. In a combined package-carrier and basket, the combination with a body portion, of pivot-plates, frame members pivoted to said IOO plates, handles connected to the frame memof said plates, and a handle connected with bers, and a handle connected With the pivotsaid plates. 1o plates. l In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature 3. In a oonibined package-carrier and basin presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 ket, the combination with a body portion, of EDWARD A. HENRY.
pivot-plates having proj eotions, frame mem- Witnesses: bers pivoted to said plates and having their A. L. PHELPS,
ends adapted to engage With the projections M. B. SoHLEY.
