SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 25, 190e.
Application iiled September 20,1905. Serial No. 279,252.
T0 all whom, it pta/y concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SKERRETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of vWashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in shoes adapted especially for pole-climbers, shinglers, loggers, and miners, and others requiring extra strong footwear.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a triple strength for the inside or instep portion of the shoe from the rear to the toe and a double quarter and a half-double vamp and a double toe-section, the double quarter being provided to impart double strength where the shoe is subjected to the most wear in climbing, the extra half-vamp giving extra strength to resist the side of the pole when going up or down, and the extension-counter gives triple strength to the shoe during the movements of the foot necessary in climbing.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a means for conveniently doubling and tripling the above-mentioned parts in any style of shoe.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the upper made up and applied to a sole. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved construction with the upper laid flat, the single quarter for the outside of the shoe being omitted. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inside back-lining and Fig. f1 is a plan view of the bellows-tongue in the fiat, which may be used in connection with the upper.
In Fig. 2, A represents the usual inside quarter of a shoe, and B the full vamp attached thereto, and C in Fig. l represents the usual outside quarter, likewise attached to the full vamp B in the customary manner.
D represents a duplicate inside quarter adapted to lie on the outer face of the main inside quarter A, and D and D2 represent, respectively, a half-vamp and a toe-cap, the said parts D, D and D2 being cut from one piece of material.
The extra inside quarter D is not as high as the customary corresponding quarter A, to which it is secured, so as to leave the inside face of the shoe single at the upper and front portions of the quarter, as is shown at 1() and 10l in Fig. 2.
In assembling the parts of the upper the inner quarters A and D are stitched together, and the half-vamp D and toe-cap D2v are transversely stitched a proper distance from the toe to the full vamp B, thus doubling the construction of the shoe at the entire inside section thereof from heel to toe and the vamp from side to side at the toe.
An outside backstay 11 is stitched in position in the usual manner, and such backstay is cut sulliciently long to extend above the upper portion of the quarter, as shown by full lines at 12 in Fig. 2, and the said extension is bent down and stitched to the upper back portion of the shoe to form a pull-strap 13.
The counter E is placed in the shoe, as usual, occupying the customary position but at the inside section of the shoe the counter is provided with an extension 14, which is carried along the inside or instep section of the shoe to the toe-cap portion between the full vamp B and the half-vamp D', as is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus providing at the back of the shoe and along its inner side and also along a portion of the vamp a triple thickness of strong material.
An inside back-lining 15 is provided, which is stitched to the inner face of the slice at the back and along the quarter, the back and portions of the sides of the counter lying between such inside back-lining and the quarters.
The shoe is provided with a bellows-tongue 16, having a recess 17 in its lower edge, and said tongue is inclined at each side of the recess, so that it can be attached at the vamp in a smooth manner, the side edges of the tongue being stitched, as is customary, to the inner faces of the quarters A and C.
The counter and extra quarter,'including the half-vamp and toe-cap, can be stitched to any kind of shoe, high or low. The soles 19 for climbers shoes must be extra heavy on the inside of the shoe in order to afford the required extra strength at such point, as it is there that the shoe when the wearer is climbing sustains the greatest wear and strain.
I desire it to be understood that the bellows-tongue described and shown need not necessarily be employed, as any desired type of tongue can be used, and that the extension- IOO counter can be attached either inside or outside of the inside quarter and half-vamp of.
any kind of footwear.
Having thus describedl my invention, I
5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentquarters and Jull vamp of a shoe, of an auxiliary quarter attached to the main quarter,
'1o and a half-vamp 'and toe-cap forming an ml main full vamp.
2. In the construction of shoes, the combi- 15 nation with the quarters and a full vamp, of
an auxiliary quarter having a half-vamp and vl. In a shoe, the combination with the .toe-cap integral therewith, the auxiliary vamp of the shoe, and a counter for the shoe,
having a side extension which is carried along the connected main and auxiliary quarters and between the half and the ull Vamps, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
f THOMAS SKERRETT.
