UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. SWEENEY AND HENRY LUTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NECKTIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed April 20, 1906. Serial No. 312.910.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN F. SWEENEY and HENRY LUTZ, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to that class of neckties in which tabs are used for the purpose of attaching the tie to the front collarbutton, so that the bow, knot, or other ornamental fashioning of the free ends of the tie may be satisfactorily and tightly produced Without imposing strain or tension on that part of the tie which encircles the neck. Neckties of this and similar character as heretofore made have been objectionable and defective in not fully accomplishing their objects and for the reason that the tabs or equivalent appendages were not adapted for use on ties of silk or other fragile or easily stretched or ruptured material.
Our invention has in view the provision of adequate and convenient means for prevent ing strain or injurious tension on that part of the tie which encircles the collar of such character that the tabs forming part of these means 'may be safely used on ties of silk or other easily strained or stretched material and that while preventing any strain or tension on that part of the tie usually subject to the same the strength, firmness, and durability of the tie will be increased.
Our. invention consists in forming the tie with an inclosed strip of suitable fabric, forming a lining to the neckband portion of the tie and terminating in suitably-finished tabs, which project through slits in the tie and are formed With buttonholes for attachment to the collar-button.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating our invention, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the complete tie, shown as encircling a collar and with the tabs disen gaged. Fig. 2 is an inner side view of a portion of the tie. Figs. 3 and 4 are views showing portions of the tie dissected to illustrate the interior arrangement of the tab-forming strip.
The tie itself may be of any desired shape and width and either made of one piece folded and stitched at its edges or, as illustrated, of two pieces stitched together with the edges introverted, as shown at a a. At suitable points vertical slits b are out in the inner fold or Width of the tie, and these are finished on the edges with buttonhole-stitching, the tie being preferably reinforced back of the slits b by pieces of cloth 0, held in place by the buttonhole-stitching. The tabs E E project through the slits b and are formed on the ends of the lining-strip F, which runs through the neckband portion of the tie, thus forming a lining to all the included portion of the tie. The lining and tab-forming strip F may be of any suitable stout fabric, either in the form and weave of a tape with finished edges or a cut strip, in Which case the edges should be folded over, as shown, and the ends doubled and stitched. The strip should be stitched to the tie, as shown at d, or in any other convenient manner. Buttonholes e e are formed in the tabs to attach them to the front collarbutton. We do not, however, limit ourselves to any special manner of forming, finishing, or attaching the strip, as this may be left to the judgmentand convenience of the manufacturer. Our invention resides, broadly, in the application to a necktie of any kind of a lining-strip having projecting ends forming tabs.
Having described our invention,we claim- A necktie having slits formed at the extremities of its neckband portion, and having an inelastic lining-strip terminating in folded and stitched tabs Which project through the slits and are integral With the fabric of the lining-strip, and have stitched buttonholes.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN F. SWEENEY. HENRY LUTZ.
