Description

sUNrmnn STATES ratentci lVLay 9, 1905.
WILLIAM A. KEYS, OF NEf YORK, N. Y.
NECKTIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,696, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed March 1l, 1905. Serial No. 249,515.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. KEYS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckties, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has relation to neckwear; and it consistsin the novel construction of ties whereby the strain is taken from the bow or knot. I-Ieretofore neckties of this class have had tabs sewed on, which tabs it was found in use would pull off.
In the drawings, Figure l shows the material 4for making the inner face of the tie. Figs. 2 and 3 show steps in the construction of the tie. Fig. 4 shows a completed tie as seen when lookingl at the inner face. Figs. 5 and 6 show modifications of Figs. 2 and 3.
In the drawings similar' letters refer to similar parts.
A represents the material from which the inner face of the tie is made.
B B represent the tabs on the inner face of the tie for attaching the 'tie to the collar-button by means of the buttonholes C C. I prefer to make my improved tie by cutting the material for the inner face as shown in Fig. l, then folding it on itself at the part marked D, and then stitching it up, as shown by the dotted lines E in Fig. 2. After it is stitched up in this way on the wrong side of the material it is unfolded, laid out fiat, and the tab B turned right side out, as shown in Fig. 3, and then the buttonholes C C are placed in the tab for attaching same to the collar-b utton.
If desired, the material for the inner face may be cut in any desired shape or may be made in three pieces and stitched together, as shown in Fig. 5, by means of the row of stitching marked F, which, as will be seen, goes from one side of the material around the outer edge of the tab to the other side of the material, in that respect differing from Fig. 2, wherein the stitching does not cross the end of the tab, for the reason that the material in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4 is in one piece.
Fig. 6 shows the modification of Fig. 5 after the material has been laid out iiat and the tab turned right side out ready for the buttonhole.
By means of my improved tie it will be seen that all of the strain is evenly distributed on the part of thc tie which encircles the collar, by reason of the tabs and the part of the tie which encircles the collar being in one piece. The tabs do not pull off when being adjusted on to the collar or pull off when being washed.
The operation of adjusting atie constructed as shown in the drawings is to place the neckband around the collar in the ordinary way and attach the tabs B B to the collar-button in front of the collar by means of the buttonholes C C in said tabs B B. In this way the wearer can use the two end portions of the tie for tying a bow-knot, or a four-in-hand, or an Ascot, or any other desirable tie, and there will be no strain put upon the tie to disarrange it.
Modifications and changes might be made, such as folding the material on itself without cutting it out, as shown in Fig. l, and then putting a buttonhole in the part so folded, thereby forming a tab with a buttonhole.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy I. As an article of manufacture, a necktie consisting of a neckband and two end portions adapted to form a tie, and tabs on the inner face of the tie made by folding the material of the inner face on itself, substantially as set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, a necltie consisting of a neckband and two end portions, these end portions being adapted to form a tie, and tabs on the inner side provided with a buttonhole adapted to iit over a collar-button, said tabs being integral with the inner face of the tie, substantially as set forth.
3. As an article of manufacture, a neoktie consisting of a neckband and two end portions adapted to form a tie` and tabs made out of` the same material as the inner face of the tie and integral with said inner face, said tabs provided with buttonholes adapted to lit over the collar-button, substantially as set forth.
4. As an article of manufacture, a necktie consisting of a neckband and two end portions adapted to form a necktie, and tabs on the inner face of the necktie, said tabs being made by so cutting the material of the inner face of the tie so that when folded on itself it willv form a tab, substantially as set forth.
5. As an article of manufacture, a necktie consisting of a neckband and two end portions, these end portions being adapted to form a tie,
and tabs on the inner face of the necltie, said tabs being formed by cutting the material foi' the inner face of the tie longer than the material for the outer face of the tie and cutting' out a portion of the said material at the point at which tabs are desired and folding the material on itself at said point so as to form tabs, substantially as set forth.
