SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,961, dated February 20, 1894. I 7

Application filed October 14, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK O. OVERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in neck-ties and consists in the combination of parts and devices hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the claims.

The objects of my invention are to provide for neck-ties astrip of fabric, suitable for neck wear and capable of being folded and tied, atwill, in the form of a bow, or bow knot or other form knot, and a holding-base provided with means for its attachment to the band of a shirt or shirt stud or button, and also with a loop for receiving and holding the strip of fabric in place and allow it to be tied in form as may be desired by the wearer. Also to provide with a base-piece means for its attachment to the band ofa shirt, or a stud or button of the same, and a loop for receiving a neck-band in such a manner as to form a loop in front of the base piece, and a neck band which may at will be secured to said base-piece and have its ends secured together at will at the back of the neck, and a strip of fabric capable of being folded and tied in the form of a bow or bow knot or other form knot. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the several views, in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which- Figure 1, is a front view of a'neck tie embodying the improvements in this invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the neck tie with the piece forming the bow or bow-knot untied and having a neck band in place with the base-piece ready to receive the bow or bow knot form-' ing piece. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same when the base piece, neck band and bow forming piece are all in place and secured. as in tended to be worn. Fig. 5 is a front view of a base piece with the bow knot piece secured in place before being tied in form. Fig. 6 is a view of a base piece having a modified form Serial No. 448,832. (No model.)

Fig. 9 is also a view of the base-piece having another form of loop which may be employed.

The same letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In the drawings Arepresents the base piece of the neck tie, which is made of any suitable material, preferably of stiif sheet form, such as paper or parchment board,.buckram or two or three ply fabric properly secured together, or of other material which will retainits curved form as it is shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. This base-piece A is made with such a suitable form in its area, or length, and width as will be suitable for covering the attaching ends of the collar of the wearer and holding the device which secures it with the band of the collar or the stud or button which secures the collar to the band of the shirt. This form of base-piece A is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and by full lines in Figs. 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. This base-piece A is provided with any suitable fastening device a by means of which the said piece may at will be secured to the band of the shirt or collar of the wearer, and it may consist of a suitable hook, loop, stud or button, secured to the rear or inner side of said base-piece as has generally been practiced.

Bis a loop provided with the said base-piece A, in front of the same and is made with a length sufficient for receiving the piece of fabric to be formed into a bow, or bow-knot.

This loop B may be produced by any suitable means, as from the substance of the body of the base-piece A as illustrated in Fig. 5, by slitting as by slits b b by removal of small or narrow strips of the material of the base piece as shown in the same figure. Or this loop B may be made of a strip of thin metal having its end portions passed from the front side of the said base-piece to the rear side and then returned through the substance of said base-piece to the front side and clinched as shown in Fig. 6; or the loop may be made of a strip of suitable material and be secured at its ends to the base piece by eyelets as shown in Fig. 7; or the said loop B may be formed ICO to said base piece as illustrated in Fig. 8; or it may be formed of a suitable piece of metal, as of wire, and have combined with it a fastoning device for securing the said base piece to the collar of the wearer, inwhich case the loop B will consist of the portion of the wire projected through the body of the base piece from its rear side and lying in front of the same as shown in Fig. 9, while the portion of the wire strip back of the base piece and illustrated by full and dotted lines in the same figure, forms the fastening device, for securing the base piece to the collar or band of the neck of the shirt.

Where this improved neck tie is to be used with stand up collars, I prefer to form loop B of a portion of the neck band piece 0 Figs. 3 and 4, and secure this loop, so formed, with the base piece A, by passing the neck band piece through slits c 0 made in a vertical direction through said base piece at a distance of one inch more or less apart and as illustrated in Fig. 3, with the opposite half portions of the said neck band piece 0 carried, each with a suitable length from the rear side of the base-piece, to the back of the neck of thewearer where they may be secured together by any suitable known means. This form of loop produced from the neck-band piece 0 may be secured from shifting by stitchings 5 shown in Fig. 4.

D is a strip of fabric made of any material which may be suitable for neck wear and for being formed at will into the form of a bow D Figs. 1, 2, and 4. This strip D may be in the form of a ribbon or in the form of a strip of linen, silk cloth or other woven fabric folded longitudinally with one or more folds as may be preferred. The said strip, thus made or formed, may be readily fixed in place with the base piece A, by being passed behind loop B, (as illustrated in Figs. 3, 5 and 6, and indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 2, 7, 8 and 9,) and then with its upper half portion suitably turned and folded on itself and with the opposite half portion also properly turned and folded so as to form with the upper half portion a how 01' bow knot as may be desired by the wearer, say as how or bow knot, shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. This folding and tying of the strip D into a bow or how knot D may be done while the base piece A is detached from the band of the collar or shirt of the wearer or may be formed and tied while said base-piece is secured at the neck of the wearer.

By my above described improvements the fabric or piece D may at will be secured to the base-piece A and be readily removed from the same for washing or doing up or for replacing it with a similar form piece for dressing the neck. With this base piece A provided with a loop B as described, the wearer may use any desired number of pieces D of fabric from which may be selected from day to day any one for wear, and when the said pieces D are made of linen they may be worn as may be selected, and whensoiled be readily removed, washed and laundered, while a simi lar one or one of a different fabric may be substituted and worn.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-

1. An article of manufacture consisting of a necktie composed of the base piece A, made of stiff sheet material, as described, and provided-with means for securing the tie to the wearer, and the horizontal loop B secured to said base piece, and the strip D of fabric above described, and capable of being secured, at will, with said base piece by being passed back of said loop and between the same, and said basepiece in direction transverse to the lines of direction of said loop and base piece, and then formed into a bow or other desired form of knot, substantially as set forth.

2. An article of manufacture composed of the base piece A having vertical slits therein, and a neck band passing through said slits to form the horizontal loop, and strip D of fabric secured between said base piece and said loop, in direction transverse to the line of directions of bot-h the base piece and loop, and formed with a bow or other knot, substantially as set forth.
