CHARLES F.- JAURIET, o-rAuRoRA, Assieivoit 'ro HIMsELr AND A. J. AMBLER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters .Patent Arm-82,843, dated October 6, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT Ill STEAM-GENERATOR.
To ALL wHoM Ir MAY CCNCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. JAUME-T, of Aurora, in .the county o ffKane, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in theConstruction o f Fire-Door Frames for Locomotives and other Engines; and I do hereby declare that the' following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference a being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in'whiclb- Figure l is .a vertical section of a fire-box, showin-g a closed door. v Figure 2 is a section and .top view of the water-space of a fire-boit, showing door-frame and door open. Similar letters of reference in the figures indicate corresponding parts. The nature of my invention consists in au improvedconstruction of fire-door fraes, whereby I use the inner lining ofthe water-space to form the lining of the door-fraine, and the outer jacket ofthe water-leg or space, to fasten the same by lanching or angingout bothl the inner lining and outer jacket, and riveting the same together on the outside of the fire-box, thu's forming a fram'e both for. the door and door-way. '.lhus it will be seen that thisdoor-frarne consists of hanging out both the inner lining and outer jacket of ,the -iire-bozr so as to forni a door-frame, for the protection ofthe watersipace roundthe"doorway ,of a single sheet of metal, and, by riveting the same together on the-outsidefaI door-frame for the door.
The practical objections to. thimbles and other devices forthis purpose have been found s o obvious and great, eitherv in their-mode of construction, their durability, orthe means and disadvantages of repairing, that some more perfect improvement in this direction haslong been desired and sought for.
It is welliund'erstood that, in thecase ot` locomotive-furnaces, there is a constant motion, and not unirequently the'movementof the inner lining and outer jacket of the fire-box is in opposite directions, the tendency of which, is, especially in the case of a door-frame constructed with thimbles, and bolted-through and through, to cause the inner lining to-crack at the bolts and give-way, and causing the water-spaceto leak, and necessitating frequent repairs, which 'are attended with greatltrouble and 'expense I am aware that an improvement-'has beenheretofore made in doonframes by langing in Athe outer jacket,
and by flangingout the inner lining, so as to,` lap and rivet together in the water-space or water-legroud the Idoor-way but this plan is ditiicult-of construction, and still more so to repair, requiring to be riveted in the narrowspace of 'the water-leg, which, at the top especially, is attended with greattrouhle and diiclty i-con struction; and, in case of repair, it is'reudily'secn that the diiiicult'yof reaching the parts required to be ri'v.- eted is greatly increased, necessitating-an almost entire destruction of thelower partof the. bok to reach the parts thus, it is attendedwlith great expense, inconvenience, and trouble. In the manufacture of this'device,
-varlolding or bearing-tool must beinserted between the inner lnng'and outer jacket ofthe iire-box to hold the rivet until the heads are .forxned all around-the door-way. To do thisafter the box is constructed, and for the purpose of.repairs, will readily appear very diiiicnlt, if not entirely iinpractieable. 4
By this invention the inventor elaiinsthat all thesedisadvantages and'diiioultiegbothin construction and repair, are removed, as, after theilanging or iianching is done, and thev parts intheir place, thel rivetingv is readily and easily done, and the parts can always beleasily and readily got at, as will'be clearly seen by reference to the accompanying drawings. i
To enable others skilledin the art, I will proceed to describe its construction, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings.
A, iire-(loor; B, outer jacket ofthe fire-box; C, inner lining of ire-boxg D, waterspace or water-legs E, inner and outer lanches orlanges riveted together,.andfo rming the door-frame; F, that part of the ilange of the inner lining, which forms the lining vofthe water-space or water-leg around the door-way. The outer jacket being prepared by Hanging the door-wayout, as .shown at E, .ig'.,2, and in ka suitable position for receiving the inner lining ofthe ireboiz,'which1make offcopper or other suitable material,'and being also flanged, as shown at F and E, in fig. 2, is 'placed within the outer jachetsudiciently forward to allow the flange to'pass up till it reaches the opening of the door-way, when the inner lining is brought back, the flange passing through the door-way of the outer jacket, until the two parts or flanges are brought into proper position for riveting, when they are readily and easily united together, andthe frame is complete.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The construction ofthe inner lining C and outer jacket of the door-way B, riveted together at the outside ofthe fire-box, whereby a, single sheet of metal forms the lining for the water-space around the door-way, and
another-single sheet, the frame for the door, es herein set forth. t
