GATE-CLOSER.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Jan, 23,1912.
Application fiiearebruar 23 1911, Serial No. 610,424.
4 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GUDiiUND- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lehi, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Gate Closer, of which the following is a specification. I
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved closing device for use in connection with hinged gates.
The primary aim of the invention is toprovide a no'velconstruction of gate closer applicable to practically any ordinaryswinging gate in such manner as to normally hold the gate closed but at the same time permit of its being swung to open position in either direction.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation'of the device embodying the present invention, applied" to a gate and gate post. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one member of the device.
In the drawings, the. numeral 5 indicates a gate of ordinary construction and 6 they gate post upon which the gate is hinged for swinging movement.
It will be observed that the gate is so mounted that it may be swung from closed to open position in either direction, the hinges for supporting the gate being indicated by the numeral 7. v
The closing device embodying the present invention includes two members one of which is carried by the gate andthe other. by the gate post. The member which is carried by the gate embodies a casing which is attached to the end post of the gate and consists of two sections each having a semicylindrical portion 8 and a similar portion 9 located. laterally beside the portion 8 and preferably of the same height. At oneedge, the portion 8 is formed with ears 10 through which are secured bolts 11 and the portion 9 of each section is also formed with cars 12 through which are secured bolts 13: it being understood that the sections of the casing are in this manner held in assembled relation. When the sections are assembled, the hinge post of the gate is clamped firmly be tween the portions 9 of the two sections with the portions 8,1 constituting the casings proper, located between this hinge post and the post 6 as illustrated in Fig. .1 of the drawings. For a purpose to be presently explained, the t1p] )ll1Cl Of the portion 8 of one casing section is recessed and the lower end of the corresponding portion of the other casing section is also recessed. A
ipin 1a is reduced and threaded at each end. as at 1'5 and held upon its upper end is a r cap 16 which is of the same diameter as the tubular casing formed by the portions 8 when assembled'and closes this casing at its upper end as is clearlyshown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. W'ashers 17 are secured upon the pin at the lower end thereof and close the lower end of the casing. Between the cap 16 and the recessed upper end .of the portion 8 of the first mentioned section there is afforded a slot 18 and a similar slot 19 is afforded at the lower end of the casing at the opposite side thereof. A spring 20 is" fitted-upon the pin- 14; and at its upper end projects through the slot 18 and at its lower end through the slot 19. x
The fixed member of the device comprises an attaching plate indicated by the numeral 21 and formed with an outstanding flange 22. At its upper and lower ends, this flange f is'formed with eyes 23 and in applying the device, as a whole, to the gate, the said fixed member is secured to the post 6 in the positionillustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
lower one ofthe said eyes 23'but upon opposite sides of the respective lugs.
tion, one end ofgthe spring disengaging from its related eye 23 when the gate is swung in one direction and the other end disengaging from its related eye when the gate is swung 1n the other direction.
The tension of the spring returns the gate to closed position afterbeing swung open and released.
The parts thus assembled, the gate may be'swung .itrom closed to open position in either dlrec- It will of course be understood thatthe casing may be made of any desired shape whereby to adapt it for application to any ordinary gate, whether of wood or metal.
hat is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class'described, av oasing slotted at its ends, apin mounted axially in the casing, a spring arranged upon' the pin and, having its ends pro ect-ing through the slots'at the ends-of the casing and pro vided' each with ahook, and a fixed member with which the projecting ends of the spring are engaged, said ends being upon opposite sides thereof.
2. In a device of the class described a casing slotted at its ends, the casing being.
formed of two sections secured together, the sections being constructed to be clamped about the post of a gate, a pin mounted axially in the casing, a spring arranged upon the pin and having oppositely disposed hooked ends projecting through the slots at the ends of the casing, and a fixed member having an outstanding flange provided with two eyes in which the ends of the spring are loosely and oppositely engaged.
3. In a device of the class described, a
movable member comprising a casing made of two stamped portions adapted to be clamped together to form two parallel tubular members, one of said members being adapted to be clamped upon a gate; and a fixed member secured to the hinge post, a pin fixedly mounted in said casing, and a spring mounted on said pin and operatively connected to said fixed member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
