GATE HINGE.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 22. 1907.

GATE-HINGE Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed July 22. 1907. Serial No. 384'97 4.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PEARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ninchester, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to new and useful improvements in gate hinges and has for its object the production of a simple and economical hinge whereby a gate may be opened or closed from either side and automatically closed when released.
ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate post and a section of a gate hinged in position thereto by means of a hinge constructed in accordance with the invention, parts broken away to more advantageously illustrate the construction of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, the gate closed; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the gate partly open.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the numerals 1 and 2 indicate respectively the gate post and the gate. As shown in the draw ings and in accordance with the invention, a staple member 3 is driven in the inner face of the post near its lower end and is provided with i an eye or aperture to receive the corresponding depending portion 4 at the inner end of a plate 45 fastened by screws or other equivalent means to the lower end of the inner post 5 of the gate and constituting one member of a hinge therefor. A plate 6 is screwed to, or otherwise removably arranged at the upper end or top of said post 5, projects inwardly beyond the inner face of the post and is provided at its projecting portion with two transversely alined eyes or apertures 7 adapted to receive the vertical or depending portions 8 at the outer ends of two horizontally disposed hinge members or rods 9 hinged at their inner ends to the inner face of the post by staples 10 or other equivalent means and disposed in angular relation relatively to each other or to the plane of the gate, with theirouter ends diverging when in a closed posltion.
In practice, when the gate is opened the free ends of the hinge members or rods 9 will swing in one general direction, while the plate 4* which constitutes a hinge member for the lower end of the gatewill swing in an opposite direction, causing the gate to diverge from the perpendicular, and it must regain its equilibrium by returning to the center of motion (see Fig. 3) and as is obvious from an examination of the drawings, as soon as the gate is released, itwill be caused to swing back to its initial or original position by force of gravity.-
From the construction disclosed, it will be seen that a hinge constructed in accordance with the invention will not only be simple in construction and consequently inexpensive in production, but will serve to automatically cause the gate to swing into its normal position after having been opened.
I claim as my invention 1. In an automatic gate closer, the combination with a gate, of a plate member fixed to the upper end of the upright member of said gate and projecting beyond the inner face of said upright and provided with laterally spaced hinge-engaging means, laterally spaced members fixed to the adjacent post at its upper end, members having their respective ends pivotally connected with said postcarried members and with the spaced means of said gate-carried plate, a hinged member fixed to said post near its lower end and at a point in alinement with a line passing through the center of the space between the laterally spaced members at the upper end of said post, and a member pivotally engaged at one end with said post member at the lower end of the post, and pivotally engaged with the lower end of said gate upright.
2. In an automatic gate closer, the combination with a gate, of a plate member fixed to the upper end of ,the upright member of said gate and projecting beyond the inner face of said upright and provided with laterally spaced. apertures, laterally spaced eyeended members fixed to the adjacent post at its upper end, U-shaped members having their legs disposed one in said post-carried eye-members and the other in the apertures of said gatecarried plate, a hinged member fixed to said post near its lower end and at a point in alinement With a line passing through I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the center of the space between the laterally my hand in presence of two subscribing witspaced eye-members at the upper end of said nesses. post, and a member pivotally engaged at one WILLIAM J. PEARSON. 5 end with said post member at the lower end Witnesses:
