UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. FOSTER, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO BERKSHIRE SPECIALTY COMPANY, OF PITTSFIELD. MASSACHU- SETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October '7, 1905. Serial No, 281,774.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be cheap in first cost, strong and durable, compact, and of a size to be conveniently carried by travelers in the pocket or in a travelingbag.
The invention consists, essentially, of a hinged sectional member one section of which is to be secured in a door-frame and the other section is adjustably connected with a member suitable for detachable connection with a door-knob or other projection; and the invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter specified, illustrated in the accomp anying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings herewith I have illustrated one example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles.
Figure 1 illustrates a portion of a door and its knob and a door-frame with a construction involving this invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the door and frame, showing the device applied. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device complete, and Fig. 4. is a detail sectional view of a part of the device. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail, and Fig. 6 is a modification thereof.
The device is preferably constructed throughout of flat sheet-steel, which renders the same strong and compact, the shape of the parts permitting the device when not in use to be folded into small compass for convenience in carrying. The members 1 and 2 are hinged at 3, the ears of the hinge being formed by rolling up the adjoining ends of the pieces and secured by a hinge-bolt. At
its outer end the piece 2 has a larger roll to form a bolt-piece 4.
At the outer end of the member 1 a slotted arm 5 is loosely secured. Said arm is slotted at 6, through which slot the rivet or bolt 7 is passed, an enlarged head 8 being fashioned on the rivet to act as a guide and retainer for the arm. By this construction the arm 5 may be extended or contracted relatively to the member or flap 1 of the hinge, and the arm 5 is movable through its slot on the pivot to adapt the device for doors having varying distances from the knob to the edge of the door.
The arm 5 is formed with a semicircular eX- tension 9, to which is pivoted or hinged at 9 the complementary curved hook 10. A snap-catch is provided between the extension of arm 5 and the hook 10 by the projecting lug or button 11 on the hook and the depression or hole 12 in the arm 5. The natural elasticity of the spring-steel hook permits the lug to slide over the face of the arm and forces the button into its seat therein. To facilitate the disengagement of the snapcatch, a thumb-piece 13 is formed on the end of the hook 10, by which the lug may be moved from its seat.
For convenience of travelers or others in stropping razors or providing a means for hanging articles the device may have a hook, as 1, riveted thereto, or, if desired, the hook, as 1', may be struck .up or punched out and turned up'from the material. As illustrated, the hooks are shown in connection with the section 1 of the hinged member.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the numeral 14 designates a door-frame of common construction; 15, a recess or mortise in the frame for the ordinary door-bolt; 16, a slotted metallic guideplate and retainer in the face of the frame for the door-bolt; 17, a door; 18, a knob on the door, and 19 the shank of the knob.
In applying the device, assuming the door to be open, the members of the hinge, and of course the arm and its hook, are held in alinement. The head or bolt 4 is inserted in the recess 15 and the door closed. Under ordinary conditions the bolt controlled by the knob would shoot into its recess; but with this device in position the bolt is held in its housing by the member 2 of the hinge. After the door is closed the device is turned on the hinge 3 to the left in Fig. 1 and the snaphook is turned back or opened on its hinge 9. The circular extension of the locking-arm is carried up under the shank of the knob. Then the snap hook is brought down over the shank, and the lug is snapped into its seat.
With the device in position in Figs. 1 and 2 it is impossible to open the door, and the device forms a convenient and steady hanger for a razor-strop or other articles.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device as described, the combination with hinged members one of said members having a bolt-head thereon, of a locking member connected to the other of said hinged members, and a pivoted snap-hook on said locking member.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of hinged members, of a member adjustably secured to one of said hinged members and adapted to be engaged about the shank of a door-knob, and a rounded bolt-head carried upon the other of said hinged members and adapted to engage the bolt-recess of a door-frame.
3. The combination in a detachable doorbolt, of hinged members one of said members having a bolt-head thereon, with a slotted arm ivotally connected with the other of said hinged members, and a snap-hook pivoted on the slotted arm.
4. The combination with a door, doorknob, and door-frame, of hinged members one of said members having a bolt-head seated in a recess in said frame, an extensible arm connected with the other of said hinged members, and locking means connected with said arm, adapted to be connected with the door-knob.
5. The combination with a door and its knob, and a doorframe, of hinged members adapted to be secured in the frame, alockingarm connected with one of said hinged mem bers, and means on said arm adapted to engage the knob, for securing the door'inclo'sed position.
6. The combination with a door and its knob and a door-frame, of hinged members one of said hinged members having a bolthead adapted to seat in a recess on said frame, an arm adjustably connected with one of said hinged members and provided with a curved extension, and a complementarily-curved snap-hook pivoted on said extension for securing the door in closed posi tion.
7. The combination with a door and its knob and a door-frame, of hinged members one of said hinged members having a bolthead thereon, a slotted arm pivoted to the other of said members, a curved extension on said arm, a curved hook pivoted on said extension, a lug on the hook, and a complesaid hinged membershaving an adjustable locking member secured thereto, of a hook carried by a portion of the device which lies upon the exterior of the door.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. FOSTER.
