Witnesse UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERTRAM S. MARTIN, OF DARLINGTON, INDIANA.
' ATC -SAFE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM S. MARTIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Darlington, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This inventlon relates to match-safes, and
has for an object to provide a device of the class embodying new and improvedfeatures vide amatch-safe having improved means whereby a single match is delivered within a channel upon the upper surface of the safe and from which it may be drawn by the finers.
g With these and other objects in view-the present invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved match-safe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the improved safe. a I
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts both figures of the drawings; In its preferred embodiment the improved match-safe forming the subject-matter of this invention comprises a case 10, having at one end an upright portion 11, extending above the body of the case. Transversely of the top of the upright portion is formed a channel 12, with a slot 13 in the bottom longitudinally of the channel and transversely of the case. Within the upright 11 is disposed the inclined pieces 14 and 15, forming a receptacle 16 with a hopper-bottom and with a slot-like charging-aperture 17 through the top of the case and adjacent to and par allel with the channel 12. Thepieces 14 and do not contact at the bottom, having therebetween a space 18, in which a plate 19 is mounted for vertical reciprocation. The plate 19 is held from lateral displacement by guide-strips 20 and 21, secured to the sides of the case, and a concavity 22 is formed in and longitudinally of the upper edge of the plate.
Within the case a lever 23 is-pivoted upon a transverse pin 24 and extends without the case through a vertical slot 25 in the end opposite the receptacle. The internal end of the lever is provided with a spring-finger 26,

extending into an aperture 27 in the lower edge of the plate, and a spring 28 is arranged to bear against the lever and to hold the plate yieldingly in a depressed position. Upon theupright 11 is mounted an abrasive mate,- rial- 29, convenient to the match-delivery, but
in such position that sparks produced by the iglnition of matches thereon may not enter t e receptacle to i nite the contained matches. The severa surfacesof the case and upright not covered by. the abrasive material may be used for the display of advertising matter. V
The charging-aperture 17 is so proportioned and disposed that it 'may remain always open for convenience in filling the receptacle, butthrough which-matches cannot be Withdrawn, making it practically impossible to withdraw more than a single match at one time and without the inconvenience of locking the receptacle.
It will be readily understood that a depression of the external end of lever 23 will raise the plate and elevate a match thereon to a position within the channel, as shown in outline, and from which it may be drawn longitudinally by the fingers, the casing serving as a housing for the lever and operating parts and protecting them from injury.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A combined match-safe and match-delivery device, consisting of an elevated matchreceptacle having in its top a depressed trans: versely-extending open-ended channel, slotted in its bottom, and a charging-a erture adjacent said channel, said receptacle aving its bottom formed'by converging sides with an opening at the line of convergence of said sides, vertically-extending guides secured to the inner sides of the case and being in vertical alinement with said bottom opening and channel-slot, a plate working at itsedges between said guides, a spring-actuated lever fulcrumed within the case and projectin at one end beyondthe' same, a finger attacIred to the working end of said lever and being thinner vertically than the lever, and passing through an orifice in the plate.
In testimony that I claim the-foregoing as 1 WALTER M. OHEsTERsoN.
