To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that FREDERICK WILLIAM PARSONS, a citizen of he United States, residing at Cleveland, in the-county of Guyahogaand Stateof Ohio, havdinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt- Collars; and I do declare thatthe following is a; full, clear, and exact desription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to improvements in shirt-collars of the lay-down ior turn-down variety, and my improved collar is so constructed that it becomes comparatively easy to button the, collarat the back of the neck and to disengage she collar from the button, all substantially .asfshown and described, and particularly pointedout in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the collar in one form of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof centrally across its rear.
It is a common and well-known objection to lay-down collars that the collar-band lies ,so snugly in front of and next to the turndown or laydown portion outside that it is exceedingly diificult to engage the collar upon the button at the back of the neck. This difliculty is of such universal experience that it need not be especially emphasized here, and it is the object of this invention to remedy the said' difiiculty and rovide a collar in which on agement witht e collar-button at the bac is rendered comparatively easy. This is accomplished in this instance by means of a tongue or flap, which is practically independent of the collar so far as handling the same in buttonin and unbuttoning is concerned, but whic is integral with the collar-band at its top. Thus in the figures, C represents the collar in its entirety,
and B the neckband. Now in order that the collar may be rovided with the benefits of my invention l cut out a ortion of the band at two places at its rear om its lower edge upward about onehalf or slightly more of the depth of the band and produce a depending tongue or projection c at the middle of the collar, containing the buttonhole and adapted to be separately swung inward for making I the said tongue or strip is a ing the collar and, in fact, without inconvenience, es ecially on account of the starched and ii i and otherwise closed condition of the co lar. flap c on the inside of thecollar,"where it is not noticeable nor objectionable in any way, and the collar is held as securely in lace as it wouldbe if it were made in the 01 way.
It is to be observed that the collars are stifl, and the buttoning and unbuttonin occurs .while the collar is about theneck, and may even be buttoned at the front, hence the. necessity of having recesses 2 in the band of such width that room is afforded on each side of tongue 0 to freely introduce the fingers from either side and press the said tongue ward from the lay-down portion indepen ently of the band of the collar when buttonin and unbuttoning takes place.
What claim is l As a new'article of manufacture, a laydown collar having a neckba'nd provided with two out-out portions at its rear forming 0- en recesses extending from the lower edge tlifereof upwarda proximately half the depth of said band, sai recesses having their greatest width at the bottom and converging up- This also brings the tongue or ward, and a tongue integral with the band be= tween said recesses and provided with abut- I tonhole, whereby said recesses rovide room to enable the fingers to be free y introduced to press the tongue inwardly independently of the remainder of the collar during buttoning and unbuttoning, said band having a continuous uncut surface from said recesses to the ends thereof.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
