Be it known that l, MARSHALL O. W'Esr, a

' citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dickeys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to that class of-dickeys worn as over-bosonis or in lieu of shirt-bosoms; and it has for its object to provide a dickey uniting a bosom and collar that may be easily laundered, quickly put on, securely kept in place, and its collar not liable to ride upon the neckband of the shirt.

To this end my invention consists in an openfront bosom, rmly secured together at the bottom of the opening, a complete wholebacked collar secured thereon, and means for securing the same to other parts of the clothing, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure 1 is a front view of my dickey complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with the collar stretched out in position to be ironed on the side which would be its back if it were a turn-down collar, or its front if a standing collar. Fig. 3 is a detail view oi my elastic tab.

A represents the main body or bosom of the dickey. It is first made in two complete parts, in any style of plaiting common to shirt-bosoms; then the two parts are joined by lapping the box portion F upon the under lap, G, and finally securing the two parts together at their lower extremity by one or more lines of stitches, af. The usual provision for studs or buttons c is made, to join the two parts together in USG.

D is a collar, of any usual form, either standing or turn-over, provided with a neckband, E, all made complete and whole, as though it were to be an independent collar, and then stitched to the upper end of the two parts of the bosom, the bosom being inserted between the parts of the collar-band at the ends of the lower edge, and extending back one-quarter of the length of the collar. the edge b being directly under the back edge, C, of the central plait. The collar-band is provided with button-holes, as usual to collars, for studs, as shown at e and d, or for common buttons.

H represents two loops, made of tape, secured to the sides of the lower end of thebosom. Each of these loops is adapted to receive one prong of one pants-suspender or the suspenderbutton, to keep the bosom laterally extended.

I is an elastic tab provided with a button, J, at its upper end, and with one or more button-holes, K, to be buttoned onto the drawers or pants, to keep the bosom down. The tab is made of elastic tape, two portions thereof being joined edge to edge at the two ends and at intervals suitable to form button-holes K between. This tab may be joined to the diekey i as usual, or it may be provided with a button, J, as above stated. By forming the buttonholes in this manner the necessity for working their edges is dispensed with, the selvage oi' the tape answering that purpose. This selvage is furthermore elastic, thereby holding a button securely, while it is more easily but toned or unbuitoned than a rigidly-worked button-hole. The two sides of this tab may be formed of one continuous pieceof tape by folding the tape upon itself diagonally twice at the lower end, thus turning the sides parallel with each other, and afterward Jche lower corners may be stitched.

vAs economy and convenience are main purposes in this invention, it may be stated that a dozen of these dickeys will pack in the space of one shirt and a dozen collarsg'lthat one of my tabs will answer for any number of my dickey-bosom is secured to the dickey-collar4 hali`-way around and holds it down in place.

The two sides of the bosom are joined at the lower end for the purpose of :insuring their being ironed alike and keeping together true and firmly when in use, as they would not do if merely buttoned together, for buttons and button-holes are notoriously nntrustworthy. l join the two parts of the bosom at the lower end only, in order that they mabr stretch out, asin Fig. 2, to allow the collar to be ironed and at'- terward be i roned themselves. Some part of the ironing is necessarily done with the two parts somewhat separated, and then the lin ishing: done with both parts laid in place together.

I am aware that a diekey whollyv openin front attached to a whole-backed collar is not new, that elastic tabs are not new, and that straps for securing,` the top or shoulder porY tions of dickeys to Suspenders or to pants-buttons are not new, and I do not claim either ot' these features, broadly, as my invention.

Having' thus described my invention. what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A diclrey Consisting` ot' an opeirfront bosom ljoined permanently together atits lower end, in combination with a collar open at the front and whole at the back, secured to the upper end of the two sides el' the bosom by lines ot' stitches joining the bosom with the neckband of the collar about one-half way around the collar, as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a diclcey, of the side loops, H, secured to the lower end of the bosom, and adapted to loop upon the suspenders or suspender-buttons, as described.

Il. The combination, with a dickcy having,71 side loops at its lower end, of a tab consisting of elastic tape in two parallel parts joined together at two or more points along their edges, forming button-holes, substantially as and for the purpose speeied.
