Description

(No Model.)
B. H. HUTGHINSON.
SHIRT.
No. 286,011. Patented 001;. 2-, 1883.
WITNESSES: INVBNTOFL NTTED STATES PATENT Trice.
ROBERT H. HUTCl-IINSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,011, dated October 2, 1883.
Application filed March 17, 1883.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1; ROBERT H. HUToI-HN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the iollowing is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to produce a shirt which is adapted to two or more approximate sizes of collars, at the same time allowing the collars to be worn higher or .lower on the neck; to which end it consists in a shirt having its bosom provided with a central button-hole below the ncckband, and having attached to the bosom in rear of such button-hole a tabwhich also is provided with a button-hole, so that if a collar-button is inserted in the button-hole of the tab it may be thence, brought into thebutt-on-hole of the bosom or brought higher up into a notch formed in the shirt-bandnamely, by making the band in two parts as hereinafter more fully set forth.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 a vertical central section of the top part of the bosom. Fig. 3 shows the tab having a vertical button-hole.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the body of the shirt; B, its bosom, and O the neckband.
I) indicates the button-hole of the bosom, which is formed in the central line thereof next or adjacent to the neckband; and E denotes the tab which is attached to the bosomin rear of the button-hole D, and provided with a button-hole, G. This tab is made of triangular or other suitable shape, and is attached to the shirt-bosom along its lower part, as at 0, while its button-hole is formed in its upper,
part and in the vertical line of the button-hole D of the bosom.
The letter 0 indicates the two parts or sections of the shirt-band. These parts are arranged to meet in the vertical central line of (No model.)
the shirt-bosom and are both rounded or tasize and lower upon the neck, the button is placedinto the button-hole of the bosom,
which can be done by removing the button from the tab entirely, the tab dro )ping down out of sight, or by leaving the button in the tab, in which case the tab merely folds on itself; or, if the button-hole G of the tab is made perpendicular, as shown in Fig. 3, in
distinction from across the tab, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the collar-button may be slidin the button-hole to its upper and lower positions without removal therefrom or any adjustment of the tab. the upper edge of a continuous neclcband or in the upper edge of the bosom, in which latter case the parts of the band terminate at the ends of the notch without meeting. It is preferred, however, to produce the notch in the manner shown.
An important advantage gained by making the shirt-band in two parts is that it allows the use of waste pieces of material, and this feature is applicable to a shirt without the tab E, but including the button-hole of the bosom. The band so made also fits the neck in a superior manner, dueto the fact that it is not liable to pucker or fold, while by the tapering of the bandsections they are not liable to show when the collar is in the lower position.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. A shirt having its bosom provided with the central button-hole, D, and its neckband provided with the central notch, s, in combination with the tab havinga button-hole, G,
The notch s can also be formed in in line with the button-ho1e of the bosom and and the notch of the band, substantially as and I0 the notch of the band, substantially as and for for the purpose described. the purpose described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 2. A shirt having its bosom provided with my hand and seal in the presence of two subthe central button-hole, D, and its neckband scribing witnesses.
made in two parts, meeting in the central line ROBERT H. HUTCIIINSON. [u s of the bosom and forming the notch s, in COlIl- Witnesses:
bination with the tab having a button-hole, CHAS. WAHLERs,
G, in line with the button-hole of the bosom E. F KASTENHUBER.
