UNITED PATENT SAMUEL KLINE, or Tel-met, NEW JERSEY;
' l HsapmEsT.
To all whom it ymwy concern/.-
Be it known that I, SAMU L Know, of
Trenton, in thecounty of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new ,and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, whereof the-following is a specification, reference *be;
ing hadtothe accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to adjustable headrests whichmaybe employed withparticu'lar advantage in connection with chairs designed be readily adjustable without the employment ofthelon -handle'd bolts or nuts usual in head-rests this class, with the advam.
tage that there are no projections local to said head-rest to I interfere with ,the op erator.
As hereinafter described, my invention comprises a rack-bar arranged to be longitudinally adjusted in a chair-back and having a cylindriform bracket arranged to support a head-rest block having a socket fitted to said bracket, said bracket and socket being provided with complementary means to secure them in any desired position of adjustment. As hereinafter described, such means comprise a set-screw in the socket arranged to engage a peripheral groove in the bracket and complementary serrations on the socket and on the bracket arranged for interengagement.
My invention comprehends the various novel features of construction and arrangement herein set forth.
In the accom anying drawings, Figure I is a front View of a fragment of a chair-back supporting a head-rest embodying my invention. Fig. II is a central vertical sectional View of the parts shown in Fig. I and also showing the up er portion of thechair-back cushion. Fi III is a central vertical sectional view of a modified form of my invention.
In said figures, 1 is the head-rest-supporting bar arranged to reciprocate in parallel guides2, provided in the upper central portion of the chair-back frame 3. Said bar 1 is recessed to form a series of rack-teeth 5, ar

said block and replacing it with the serrations 22 and 23, engaged in' the desired position, in which it may be retained against accidental lateral displacement by the set-screw 26. This form of my invention is advantageous in that it provides means to positively lock the head-rest block in any desired angular position without dependence upon the mere frictional engagement of the set-screw.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim- 1'. The combination with opposed parallel guides; of a bar provided with a rack arranged to reciprocate between said guides, and carry a bracket with a cylindriform head provided with a peripheral groove; a springpressed pawl pivoted. on said guides, arranged to retain said bar in adjusted osition; a head-rest block having a socket tted to said head; and, a set-screw carried by said block, arranged to engage the groove on said head, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with opposed parallel guides; of a supporting-bar arranged to reciprocate between said guides and provided with a bracket with a cylindriform head having serrations extending parallel with its axis; means arranged to retain said bar in adjusted he upper part of the rack-bar 21 extends forwardly over the framegandhas its cylin= secured in any desired angular position rela tively to the bar 21 by laterally removing the position; a head-rest block provided with a v socket having serrations fitted to the serrations on saidhead; and,vmeans arranged to normally secure said head-rest block against lateral displacement with respect to said 5 head, substantially as set forth.
3. In a head-rest, the combination with a bracket comprising a cylindriform head having a peripheral groove; of a head-rest block aving a cylindriiorm socket fitted to said 10 head in removable relation therewith; and a 2o tions fitted to the serrations on said head, in
removable relation therewith; and, a setscrew carried by said block arranged to en- I gage said head and prevent the removal of said block, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with opposed arallel guides; of a supporting-bar arrange to reciprocate between said guides; a bracket carried by' said bar, and having a cylindriform head with its axis extending transversely with respect to said bar; means arranged to retain said bar in adjusted position between said guides; a head-rest block having a cylindriform socket fitted in removable relation on said head; and, means carried by said block arranged to engage said head and prevent the removal of said block, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with opposed parallel guides; of a supporting-bar arranged to reciprocate between said guides; a bracket carried by said bar in rigid rel." tion therewith, and having a cylindriiorm head with its axis extending transversely with respect to said bar means arranged to retain said bar in adjusted position between siid. guides; a head-rest block having a cylindriform socket fitted in removable relation on said head; and, means carried by said. block arranged to engage said head and prevent the removal of said block, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, at Trenton, in the State of New J ersey this 7th day of February, 1905.
SAMUEL KLINE.
