To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. MORTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Rests for Draw-Cut Shapers; and i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in back rests for draw out shapers and its object is to provide a conveniently adjust-ed back rest to engage the work and hold the same rigidly against the action of the cutting tool; to provide a device that is quickly and readily adjusted to fit in place between the work and the frame of the shaper; to provide means for conveniently moving the same out of the way when not in use and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective of a portion of a draw out shaper with my device applied thereto and in posit-ion for use; Fig. 2 a front elevation of my device in position for use; Fig. 3 a plan view of the same; Fig. 4- the same swung out of the way; Fig. 5 a transverse vertical sect-ion on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 a detail of the adj ustable collar.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents a portion of the frame of a draw out shaper. 2 the reciprocating member or ram of the same carrying the cutting tool. 3 the adjustable bed of the same for supporting the work. These parts are as ordinarily constructed and my device consists of providing such a machine with an adjustable back rest adapted to position between the work and the face of the main frame 1 and rigidly support the work against the thrust of the cutting tool carried by the ram 2.
4 represents a horizontally disposed adjustable bar adapted to engage the rear of the work and support the same. This bar may be modified in form as occasion may require to fit different shapes of work to be operated upon. This bar is slidably mounted Specification of Letters Patent.

by means of tongue and groove upon a wedge block 5 which block in turn is slidably adjustable on an oppositely tapered arm 6 provided with suitable seats 6 to en gage the flat vertical surface of the frame 1 and be rigidly supported thereby. By means of the oppositely tapered connection between the arm 6 and the block 5 the distance bet-ween the faces of the frame 1 and of the supporting bar 4 may be varied by moving the block longitudinally relative to the arm. To securely hold the block in adjusted position it is provided with slots 7 and in the part overlapping the arm 6. Binding bolts 7 are provided mounted in the arm and extending through the slots whereby the block is securely clamped in place when adjusted.
At one end the arm 6 is provided with an extension 8 which is rotatively mounted and vertically adjustable on a vertical post 9 being provided with a sleeve 10 to receive the post the sleeve being partially divided as at 10 and furnished with a binding screw whereby the arm may be fixed upon the post by turning the screw.
To vertically adjust the device on the post an adjustable collar 11 divided and furnished with a binding screw as shown in Fig. 6 is provided on the post 9 upon which the device is rotat-ively supported. When adjusted in operative position the device is further secured by means of a clamping member 12 slidably mounted on the extension and adapted to engage the rear side of the frame 1 as shown in Fig. 3 and to adjust this member on the extension to engage and disengage with the frame a horizontal slot 14 is provided in the extension and a binding bolt 13 is inserted in the clamp 19 and is adjustable in the slot. By loosening this bolt the clamp can be slid into and out of engagement with the rear of the frame.
The construction shown in this device can be conveniently adjusted between the face of the frame and the rear of the work and afi'ords a substantial and rigid support for the work to resist the thrust of the cutting tool and whenever out of use can be readily swung about the axis of the post 9 out of the way until wanted for further use.
What I claim is:
1. A back rest for draw out shapers, comprising an arm adapted to engage the frame of the shaper, a wedge block mounted upon the arm and adapted to support the work and a post on which the arm is horizontally rotative and vertically adjustable.
2. A back rest for draw out shapers, com prising an arm pivoted at one end to swing into and out of engagement with the frame of the shaper, a wedge block adjustably mounted on the arm and a bar adapted to engage the work slidably mounted on the wedge block.
3. A back rest for draw out shapers, c0mprising an arm adapted to engage the frame of the shaper, a clamp to secure the arm in contact with the frame, a wedge block adjustably mounted on the arm and a post on which the arm is rotative and Vertically adjustable.
4:. In combination with a draw out shaper, an arm having seats to engage the frame of the shaper, a post on which the arm is horizontally rotative, a vertically adjustable collar on the post supporting the arm, a wedge block adjustable 0n the arm and a bar adapted to engage the work slidably mounted on the wedge block.
5. In combination with a draw out shaper, an arm adapted to engage the front of the shaper frame, a post on which the arm is rotative, an adjustable collar on the post supporting the arm, a wedge block adjustable on the arm and having slots therein, clamping bolts mounted in the arm and adjustable in the slots, a bar slidably mounted on the wedge block to engage the work and support the same and a clamping slide on the arm to hold the same in contact with the frame.
