Be it known that I, CHARLES J. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State o-f New Jersey, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved vise, and more particularly such as is generally used for holding work on drill presses, shapers, milling machines, and other machines employing a table for holding the work under operation, the object of the invention being to provide a vise which will be simple and economical in construction, and which may be employed for holding or clamping work of various shapes, sizes and dimensions, and which will also largely eX- ceed in capacity for depth or lengt-h, the vises now ordinarily used.
`With these and other ends in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved vise, the supplementary jaws being shown detached. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 6 is a detached view showin@ the front and rear jaws having the suppIementary jaws attached thereto. Fig. 7 show the portions of the front and rear jaws having the supplementary jaws removed therefrom. Fig. 8 is a View in side elevation of the rear jaw. Fig. 9 is a view in perspective of the detached steel face. Fig. 10 is a sectional view of a stop for the rear jaw.
Referring to the drawings, 11 represents the bed or base of the device, which may be bolted or otherwise secured to a table or other support. The forward end of this base has formed on or secured thereto the bracket or support 12, through which passes the screw 13, said screw having on its outer free end the handle 14, by which it is turned, collars 15 being employed to retain the screw in proper position in the bracket 12.

formed on the lower side of the forward aw 19, said lug or projection 18 having secured to the lower side or end thereof the plate 20, which fitting against the shoulder 17 prevents the jaw from being raised or lifted from the bed 11. In this jaw is securely held a block 21 threaded on the screw 13, the rear wall of said jawbeing provided with a hole or opening to permit of the passage of the outer free end of the screw 13 through it when the jaw is moved forwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 2. This jaw 19 is preferably formed as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings, that is, in the shape of a hollow block, although of course, it will be understood without further description or illustration that it may be made solid. On the bed or base 11 is also mounted a rear jaw 22, also formed in the shape of a hollow block, the lower side 23 thereof being provided with a hole or opening, through which passes the bolt 24, provided with a head 25, traveling in an undercut slot 26 formed in the bed vor base, the upper end of the bolt being provided with the nut 27, for the purpose of holding said rear jaw in its several adjustments on the bed, one side of this rear jaw being open, as illustrated in Fig. 3, in order that easy and ready access may be had to the nut 27.
Both the forward and rear jaws of the vise are provided, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, with the detachable faces 28, 29,
which as illustrated in Fig. 9, may be provided with the pins or pegs 30 to fit into openings formed in the upper portions of the jaw. These removable faces may be made plain, as illustrated in the drawings, or may be of any peculiar or special shape, in order to hold or clamp correspondingly shaped work between the same.
In the upper side or faces of both the front and rear jaws, are formed openings 31, 31a, tapped for the reception of a bolt or screw 32, 33, said bolts 32,' 33, being employed for the purpose of securing to said jaws the supplementary jaws 34, 35, each comprising a plate and an upwardly eX- tending flange, although of course these jaws may be made of any form to accommodate any peculiarly shaped work, thereby materially adding to the capacity of the vise.
As illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, these supplementary jaws are capable of being rotated and secured in place at any desired angle, and where work of special form or size is under operation, they may be made of any peculiar or particular shape. It will. also be understood t-hat the rear jaw 22 may also be rotated and set at any angle, and may be grooved vertically on one face, as illustrated at 36, (Fig. l), or horizontally, as illustrated at 37. Furthermore, one of the sides or faces of this rear jaw may be machined its full depth or height, and at right angles to the base or bed, whereby to impart to it all the'advantages of an angle plate without the use of a strap or bolt.
If desired, bach of the rear jaw 22 may be secured a stop 38, comprising a plate through which passes a bolt 39, the head d0 of the latter traveling in the undercut groove 26 formed in the bed plate, this bolt having a nut l1 threaded on the upper end thereof in order to securely fasten the plate or stop 38 in position.
From the foregoing it will be understood that by means of the construction above described, the capacity of 'the machine is largely and materially increased over other vises of ordinary construction, it being possible to adjust the rear aw on the bed to within any desired distance of the forward movable jaw. Furthermore, the rear jaw may be set at any angle desired to accom-A modate any particular kind of worl, as may also the supplementary jaws 34, 35. In fact, by means of the removable faces 28, 29, and the removable supplementary jaws Sli, various sizes and shapes of work may be held or clamped in the vise, which could not be held in vises of the ordinary construction. lt will also be understood that my improved vise is simple in construction and economical` and cheap to build.

A vise of the character described comprising a bed having parallel upper and lower faces and two slots in alinement with o ne another; a movable forward jaw mounted upon the upper face of said bed and having an upper face extending parallel with the upper face of said bed and a depending portion adapted to move within one of said slots to thereby form a guide for the jaw, a screw located above the upper' face of said bed and engaging said forward jaw for moving the same along said bed; a bracket carried by said bed and which bracket supports and provides a fixed bearing for said screw; a rear jaw having a flat lower face provided with an opening and mounted upon the fiat upper' face of said bed and adjustable longitudinally thereupon toward and from said forward jaw, and also capable of angular adjustments about an axis at right angles to the upper face of said bed, said rear jaw having an upper face eX- tending parallel with the upper face of said bed, a bolt extending through the opening aforesaid of said rear jaw and the head of which is slidable in the second of said slots, and which bolt serves as an axle about which said rear jaw may be adjusted; and a removable supplemental jaw secured to the fiat upper face of each of said iirst mentioned jaws and each of which supplemental jaws is angularly adjustable about a vertical axis.
2. A vise of the character described comprising a bed having parallel upper and lower faces, two slots in alinement with one another and an opening between the ends of said slots; a movable forward jaw mounted upon the upper face of said bed and having a depending portion adapted to move within one of said slots to thereby form a guide for the jaw; a screw located above the upper face of said bed and engaging said forward jaw for moving the same along said bed; a bracket carried by said bed and which bracket supports and provides a fixed bearing for said screw; a rear jaw rectangular in outline and having a flat lower face provided with an opening and mounted upon the fiat upper face of said bed and adjustable longitudinally thereupon toward and from said forward jaw, and also capable of angular adjustment about an axis at right angles to the upper face of said bed; a bolt extending through the opening aforesaid of said rear jaw and the head of which is slidable in the second of said slots, and which bolt serves as an axle about which said rear jaw may be rotated, said rear aw having a vertical groove extending throughout one of its faces and a horizontal groove formed in another of its faces.
