To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY WTEST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Estabutchie, in the county of Jones and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Knife-Setting Gage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is designed to provide a gage, simple in construction, effective in 0peration, and adapted to accurately set the knife edges on a cutter head parallel with the axial line of said head, thereby insuring a smooth, clean-cut surface on the material worked by said knives.

Other objects relating to the specific conh struction and special arrangeuY ent of the several parts of my invention will be understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gage -embodying my invention applied to a cutter head; Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Eig. 4 is a side elevation of a supporting nections mounted thereon.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views` As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents a shaft provided with shoulders 2 upon which is mounted a cutter head 3 having knives 4 of ordinary construction, and provided with the usual slots 5 by means of which and engaging stud bolts 6 the knives nay be adjusted transversely of their length on the cutter head. The gage shown herein is provided with clamps adapted to grasp the shaft upon which the cutter head is mounted, and consisting preferablyT of arnis 7 and 8 pivotally.
connected by means of a hinge pin 9, the arm 8 being bent to form an angle adapted to be applied to the shoulders 2 of the shaft 1, while the arm pressing against said shaft, holds the angle of the arm 8 in engagement with the shaft 1, thereby holding the gage in alinement with said shaft. The arms 7 and S are held firmly in place against the shaft l by means of springs 10 connecting said arms. The arms 7 of the clamps are preferably provided with vthreaded studs 11 extending through the upper ends of brackets 12, and
' provided with adjusting nuts 13 arranged between said brackets and clamps, and also with thumb nuts 14 arranged on the outer side of the brackets 12 so as to adjust the bracket and con-v bracl-*ets 12 inwardly and outwardly relative to the axial line of the cutter head, thereby adapting the gage to be used with cutter heads of different widths. Hangers 15 are attached to the brackets 12 and preferably provided with pins 16 which are adapted to engage slots 17 formed in the upper ends of sleeves 1S. These sleeves are mounted to slide longitudinally 4of the hangers 15, and are provided with a feather 19 which engages corresponding grooves formed in heads 20. These heads have a sliding engagement on the sleeves 18 and may be fixedly secured thereto by means of thumb screws 21 mounted on said heads. The heads 20 are attached in any suitable manner to gage bars 22 preferably by means of pins 23 Fig. 3 forn"I ed on said heads, and engaging apertures in the ends of said bars. The gage bars 22 have a sliding engagement with a gage 24, which is provided with graduating lines 25 arranged in parallelism, and also with a scale 26. rIhe gage bars 22 are provided on their bacl with thumb screws 27 by means of which the gage bars in ay be clanped in engagenent with the gage 24, the edges of the gage bars being beveled to engage correspondingly beveled walls of a recess formed on the back of the gage 24, making a dove-tail connection.
Then the device is in use, it is attached to the shoulders or shaft of a cutter head in the manner already described, the arms 8 centering the clamps on the shoulders of the cutter head'. The sliding connection between the gage bars 22 and the gage 24 permits the gage bars to be extended or contracted in length to suit cutter heads of different lengths. The gage may then be adjusted bodily transversely of its length by adjusting the brackets 12 inwardly or outwardly on the threaded studs 11, and when adjusted may be locked in position by means of the nuts 13 and 14. When in such position one of the knives v4 of the cutter head is arranged with its cutting edge in close proximity to the graduating lines 25 of the bar 24. The knife may then be accurately and quickly adjusted on the cutter head by arranging the cutting edge of the blade in alinement with the parallel graduating lines of the gage. The scale of the bar enables extra or special cutters to be readily placed on the cutter head at any desired point throughout its length. After the blade has been properly adjusted and locked in its adjusted position on the cutter head, the gage may be With-- drawn from the cutter head by sliding the heads 20 lengthwise of the hangers l5, there- .by moving the gage 24 outward from the cut- The slots 17 in the sleeves 18 by engaging with the pins 16 of the hangers 15 prevent rotary motion of said sleeves on the hangers, and keep the clamps in alinement and parallel with each other, and the adjustability of the heads 20 on the sleeves 18 enable the gage to be set to adjust the cutting edge of knives arranged at variable distances from the axial line of the shaft upon which the cutter head is mounted. The sleeves 1S are held normally in engagement with the studs 16 of the hangers 15 by means of spiral springs 28 mounted on said hangers, and adapted to permit said sleeves to have a sliding engagement thereon, so as to enable the gage to be removed from the edges of the knives, as hereinbefore described, and be adjusted in succession without removing the gage from the cutter head. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I 1. A knife setting gage comprising centering clamps, brackets adjustably connected with said clamps, hangers connected with said brackets, gage bars mounted in said hangers, and a gage ad]l usta-bly mounted on said gage bars.
2. A knife centering gage comprising centering clamps, provided with threaded studs, brackets mounted upon and adjustable lengthwise of said studs, hangers connected with said brackets, gage bars mounted on said hangers, and a gage adjustably mounted on said gage bars.
3. A knife setting gage comprising clamps having bent arms adapted to center said clamps on a shaft, and provided with threaded studs, brackets mounted upon and adjustable longitudinally of said studs, lock nuts mounted upon said studs on opposite sides of said brackets, hangers connected with said brackets, gage bars mounted on said hangers, and a gage adjustably mounted on said gage bars.
4. A knife setting gage comprising centering clamps, hangers connected with said centering clamps, sleeves movable lengthwise of said hangers, heads adjustably mounted en said sleeves, and a gage mounted on said heads.
5. A knife setting gage comprising supporting clamps having bent pivoted arms adapted to center said clamps on a shaft, springs secured to the arms of each of said clamps, studs connected with said clamps, brackets adjustable longitudinally of said studs, means for locking said brackets on the studs, hangers connected with said clamps, and a gage adjustably mounted upon gage bars connected with said hangers.
6. A knife setting gage comprising supporting clamps, brackets adjustably connected with said clamps, hangers connected with said brackets, sleeves adapted to slide longitudinally on said hangers, springs adapted to move said sleeves in one direction, means for locking said sleeves against rotary motion, heads having a splined connection with said sleeves, gage bars mounted on said heads, and a gage having a sliding engagement with said gage bars.
7. A knife setting gage comprising supporting clamps, brackets adjustably connected with said clamps, hangers mounted on said brackets, gage bars mounted on said hangers, and a gage connected with said gage bars and provided with longitudinal graduating marks.
8. A knife setting gage comprising supporting clamps, brackets adjustably connected with said clamps, hangers connected with said brackets, gage bars mounted on said hangers and a gage connected with said gage bars and provided with a scale of linear units.
