Specification of Letters Patent.
ratenteol June 12, 1906.
Application filed December 4, 1905. Serial No. 290,291.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMEON DESMOND PURDY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to the construction of brushes of the general type such as employed in making of shavingbrushes, painters brushes, and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction which will hold the bristles in place with great security and which can be economically manufactured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of one form of my improved construction of brush; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a modification; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3.
I construct the bristle-holding ferrule A with two internal annular shoulders (I. a, which may be produced in various ways, as by spinning the ferrule in a suitable manner, such as shown in Fig. 1.
Within the center of the set of bristles B I set two plugs C C, which are adjustably mounted upon a stem D, as by threading the lower end of the latter into the lower plug C, while the head (i of the screw-stem bears upon the upper side of the upper plug 0, through which the stem passes freely, Fig. 1, or, as shown in Fig. 3, the stem may pass freely throughbothplugs and be threaded into a nut C The two plugs O and C are introduced with surrounding bristles into the ferrule, so that one plug C will be above the upper shoulder a and the other below the lower shoulder a on the ferrule, and the two plugs are preferably made coned or wedge-sha ed on their adjacent faces, as shown. Wlien the screw-stem D is turned, as by a screwdriver, to the right, the two plugs will be r drawn toward each other and will tightly grip the surrounding bristles between them and the respective shoulders at a of the ferrule A. I
This construction is economical to manufacture and holds the bristles firmly and produces the desirable hollow center within the bristles near the mouth of the ferrule.
The handle E may be set into or otherwise secured to the ferrule, and, if desired, the latter may be inclosed in an ornamental sheath F, Figs. 3 and 4..
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a brushferrule having internal shoulders, bristles and plugs within the bristles above and below said shoulders'and means to draw the plugs toward ternal shoulders, in combination wit bristles and two plugs connected with each other within the bristles, one above and the other below said shoulders to bind the bristles against the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SIMEON DESMOND PURDY.
