BRANCH BOX. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24, 1906.
WA GBMM ATTORNEY OFFICE.
Mormon HAVENS, in, or ALBANY, NEW YORK.
- nnanori Box.
Specificati'ori of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 24, 1906. Serial No. 307,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mon'roN Havens, Jr.', of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Branch Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the productionof a branch box for electric wires, which is particularly simple and economical in construction, and highly eflicient and durable in use; and to this end it consists in the novel ctnnbinat-ions and means hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had tothe accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a preferable construction of my branch box, a conduit and a pair of wires being shown inoperative relation thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan of the body of the branch box. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken, respectively, on
lines AA and B-B, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a.
sectional iew taken on line C-C, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan of the closure.
' The body 1 of my branch box is preferably hollowand elongated, and is formed of metal and provided with an opening 2 in one side thereof, and with an inlet passage 3 communicating with the interior of the body. Opposing lengthwise portions of the inner face of the body are'provided with diagonally arranged lugs 4 formed with threaded sockets 5 extending through the outer and inner faces 6, 7 thereof. These faces 6., 7 are disposed between, and spaced apart from, the planes of the open s1de of the body 1 and the wall 8 opposite said open passage 3 is shown as extending laterallyfrom the body 1 it is obvious that the branch box may he provided with one or more passages extending either downwardly or Ion-- gitudinally. 1
The open side of the body 1 is provided with an elongated closure usually formed of a single piece of insulation, as porcelain, and provided with one or more perforations 12, for permitting the outlet of one or more of the wires 10, the illustrated construction of the closure having perforations 12 in its ends for the outlet of both wires 10. Said 1 closure 11 is also provided with an elongated reduced portion 13 inserted into the opening 2, and having its inner face opposed to, and engaged with, the outer faces 6 of the lugs 4. A ledge 14 is provided on the closure 11 at the base of the reduced portion 13 and is opposed to, and spaced apart from, the edge 15. Any suitable connecting means, as screws 16, are passed through openings 17 in the closure 11 and into the threaded sockets 5 of the lugs 4 for detachably securing said closure'to the body 1.
By constructing the body 1 and the closure 11 as described, liability of breakage of the more or less fragile closure is reduced to a minimum, since said closure engages the body only atseparated points and in close proximity to the securing screws 16, and is formed of full thickness at said points of engagement. Moreover, the threaded sockets 5 are readily and cheaply formed with a minimum liability of injury to the tools used in the formatioh of said sockets.
What I claim is fl A branch box for wires comprisinga hollow elongated body formed with a passage for the inlet of the wires, and with an open Patented Jan. 16, 1912.
side, and having its inner face provided with foration for the outlet-of a wire or wires,
and being provided with a reduced portion inserted into the opening of said open side, the inner face of the reduced portion being opposed to, and. engaged with, the outer face of the lug, and the closure being also provided Wih e ledge arranged at the base of signed my name 111 we presence of two atahe reduced portion and opposed to the, testing Witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county edge slfi'lffii llldin said openingend means of Onondaga, in the State pf New York, connecting the closure and the lug for de-j' this 20th dayofMarch 1906 caehably seem-imp the eiesur'e to the body, I MORTN HAVENS, JR. substantie'fl I 'l the purpose speci: fled.
