UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
WALTER I. KIRK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO LYON & HEALY, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HARP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application led April 13, 1917. Serial N0. 161,734.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, IVALTER I. KIRK, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Harps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to harps.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a construction by which the harp may be braced or strengthened, especially at the upper part of the pillar and at the junction of the same with the neck.
A further obj ect of the invention is to add security to the joint of the pillar and neck.
In carrying out the invention in accordancewith the construction herein set forth,
I provide a reinforcing device which is.
adapted to fit inside of the upper end of the pillar and to make a connection with the end of the neck which fits into the pillar, so that the joint between the two parts is made perfectly secure and rm and at the same time the pillar is reinforced to prevent it from becoming bent or broken. This permits the neck to be made relatively small or thin without any danger of disastrous results. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view of a harp provided with a reinforcing device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said reinforcing device.
Referring to the drawings I show a harp A having the usual pillar 1 and neck 2. The upper end of the pillar l is provided with a longitudinally extending socket or rec-ess 3 into which is fitted a reinforcing member 4. The latter may be of various forms or shapes but is preferably as shown in Fig. 2 and consists of a lower flat plate-like ortion la and an upper socket portion 4b. he portion la is provided with apertures 5-5 for screws or other fastening devices and the sides of the socket portion 4b are provided with apertures 6 and 7 respectively, for screws or The member 4 is secured in the socket or recess 3 with the socket portion 4J opening toward the neck 2 so that the end portion 2a of said neck iits into said socket member 4b. Screws 8 are passed through the side walls of the portion 4U into the end 2a and other screws 9 are passed through the apertures 5 in the plate portion 4a so as to secure the device in position in the pillar l. A cross piece 10 is preferably provided at the lower end of the socket 4b so as to form an abutment or shoulder for the end portion 2a.
In this way a rm and secure joint is provided and at the same time the harp is strengthened and reinforced,
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A harp having its pillar provided with a reinforcing member adapted to form a connection for the neck.
2. A harp having its pillar provided with a reinforcing member having a socket receiving an end portion of the neck.
3. A harp having its pillar provided with a longitudinally extending recess containing a reinforcing member which is provided with a socket receiving an end portion of the neck.
4C. A harp having its pillar provided with a longitudinally extending recess contain-- ing a reinforcing member which is provided with a socket receiving an end portion of the neck, the lower portion of said reinforcing member being flat and having apertures and securing devices passing through said apertures.
5. A harp having its pillar provided with a longitudinally extending recess containing a reinforcing member which is provided with a socket receiving an end portion of the neck, the lower portion of said reinforcing member being fiat and having apertures for securing devices, and the socket portion of said member having its side walls provided with apertures for securing devices to pass into the end portion of the harp neck, and securing devices passing through said sets of apertures.
6. A harp having the upper portion of its pillar provided with a longitudinally extending recess, a reinforcing member arranged in said recess and having a socket containing an end portion of the neck, means for holding said reinforcing member in position in the pillar and means for holding the end portion of the neck in position in said socket.
7. A harp having the upper portion of its pillar provided with a longitudinally exi tending recess, `a reinforcing member arranged in said recess and having a socket containing an end portion of the neck, screws holding said reinforcing member in position in the pillar, and other screws holding said neck end portion in position in said socket. f Y
8. A harp having the upper portion of its pillar providedv with a longitudinally eX- tending v recess, a reinforcing member arranged in said recess and having a socket containing an end portion of the neck, and means for holding said reinforcing member in position inthe pillar and the end portion of the neck in position in said socket, said reinforcing member also having'a shoulder against which said neck end portion fits and rests.`
V9. A harp having the upper end of its pillarprov'ide'd with a recess, and a reinforc- Inember secured in said'rec'ess, said reinforcing member having a socket receiving an'end portion of the harp neck, and also having'a shoulder forming the lower end of said socket, said shoulder providing an abut- A ment upon which the harp neck end portion rests.
10. A harp having the upper end portion of its pillar provided with a recess, a'l reinforcing member 4: arranged in said recess, saidv rein'forcin'g'member having a iat lower portion 4a andan upper boX-like portion 4b Vforming a socket open vat the top and at one side and closed at the bottom by a cross piece 10, the end portion of the harpv neck being fitted into said box-like portion and resting upon said cross piece ,1.0, screws passed through the fiat portion-1l?l1 to hold said reinforcing member in positionfand other screws passing through' the wall's of said box-like portion' 4b and holding the end portion of said harp neck inposition therein.
lIn witness whereof, I hereunto ,subscribe my name this 21st day of March, A. D; 1917.
