PATENT OFFICE.
HUBERT KRANTZ, OF YORK, N. Y.
RECEPTACLE AND ATTAcHMENT-PLUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,456, dated February 16, 1904.
Eppiiaeon ned october 24, 1903.
To a/Z whom, t may concern: I
Beit known that I, HUBERT KRANTZ, a citi# in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Receptacle and Attachment-Plug, of which the following is a'specication.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of such receptacles as are used in electric wiring in conjunction with attachment-plugs, a further feature of my invention being the providing of said receptacle with a suitable inclosing boXin which it may be protected from injury.
In the accompanying 'drawin,g ;s, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved receptacle. Fig. 2 is plan of the inclosing box with cover and re ceptacle removed. Fig..3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but withy the receptacle in place. Fig. 4 is a section online 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5, Fig.'3. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of an attachmentplug for use with this receptacle. Fig. 7 is a plan of said plug; and Fig. 8 is a plan, and Fig. 9 a side view, of the binding-post and contact-post to be used in the receptacle.
The receptacle R is formed of slate, fiber, porcelain, or other suitable insulating material. I have shown it formed of a cylindrical block. In this block are circula' main recesses 2 and additional'circular recesses 3, the additional recesses being formed in the block of greater depth than the main recesses. Each main recess is open to the adjacent additional recess. Two passages 14 are formed entirely through the block, each passage opening at its upper part into the adjacent recess 2 and in like manner to the recess 3, Fig. 5, Within each recess 2 is mounted a disky D,
constitute a contact-post fitting into the additional recess 3. The disk D may be secured by screws 6, passing from the under side` of the insulatingblock, Fig. 5, and each disk has a binding-screw S, which serves to bind a conducting-wire fw, entering through the passage 14.
The described receptacle is preferably in- Serial No. 178,411. (No model.)
closed in a box B, which has an outwardlyturned ange f, provided with tapped holes t t and countersunk holes it 'hg At its lower end .the box B has an inwardly-turned flange f, provided with tapped holes L It.
In placing the box in position in a building the electric wires are run through the open center at the bottom of the box, whichis secured to the wall or floor by screws passing through the holes lik. The receptacle R is then placed in position with the conducting- Wires passing through thepassages 14, and fastening-screws s2 s2 are passed through openings inthe block and screwed into the tapped The wires w are then connected up andsecured .by the binding-screws S. A cover C, havingv two .insulatedw'bushings b, is then fastened to the box by screws lO 10, which engage in the tapped holes t' in the flange f of the box B, Fig.' 10. These bushings and the holes which they protect are directly in line with the recesses 3, vhich contain the clips c.
An attachment-plug A, which-I prefer to use in connection with this receptacle, is shown in Figs. 6 and 7. It comprises a block of insulation having a central opening 11 for the wires which branch out at'opposite sides l into the enlarged lower end 13 of openings 12, which have also enlarged upper ends l18. The contact-posts P are tapped at their upper ends and are also provided with fixed collars 15 and washers 16. The wires arel connected up between the xed collars and washers and securely held by the tightening of screws 17, bearing on shoulders' inV the enlarged upper ends 18 of the openings l2.
I claim as my inventiond 1. A receptacle for an attachment-plug, having a main recess and an additional recess, a contact-post and an attached disk, the disk being in the main recess, and the post in the additional recess, and abinding-screw carried by the disk, and a cover-plate provided with an opening in line with the additional recess, substantially as described.
2. A receptacle for an attachment-plug, having a main recess open at the top and an opening 14 through the receptacle from the bottom scribed.
ing a circular main recess open at thetop, a c
circular opening through the plughaving one end opening to the main recess and a disk in said recess with a contact-post and bindingscrew carried by said disk, substantially as described.
4. A receptacle for an attachment-plug, hav-V ing a block with a circular main recess, acircular opening through the block for a wire, and a circular additional recess open at the top for a binding-post, both the circular opening and the additional recess, being opened into the circular side of the main recess, adisk and binding-screw within the main recess and a binding-post attached to the disk and within said additional recess, substantially as de- 5. An attachment-plug, having a main recess and an additional recess parallel thereto, a disk secured on the bottom of the main recess, and clips secured to said disk, but extending into said additional recess, substantially as described.
6. An attachment-receptacle, comprising an insulating-body part carrying the contacts, a metallic box therefor open at both ends, to which it is secured, said box adapted to be se-l cured to the wall, a cover for the receptacle adapted to be secured to the box, and insulated openings in the cover for the plug, substantially as described.
7. The combination of a circular box having .an outwardly-turned iange at the top and an inwardly-turned'flange at the bottom, and a circular receptacle secured therein, said receptacle having contact-posts at its upper part, a cover attached tothe outturned flange of the box and having insulated openings in line with said contact-posts, substantially as described.
8. rl`he combination of a circular open-endv ed box having an outwardly-turned flange at H. KRANTZ'.
