TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it'known that I, FRANCIS CLAUSEN, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California., have invented an Improved`Belt-Buckle; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suiicieut to enable any person skilled inthe art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experimentf The object of my invention is to provide an improved buckle for ladies belts, so constructed that the belt can be quickly and easily tightened or loosened, and when once confined will not draw out or become loose, and one in which the necessity of piercing holes in the belt and thus destroying it is avoided; and consists of a buckle of the desired form, having al bevelled longitudinal catch or lip on its underside, projecting backward at au angle. A piece of metal having an opening in it similar to the buckles now in use, has one end of the belt passed through and secured to it.' This piece of metal turns on a. shaft, and has its bearings at each end of the buckle. An arm or lever projects from the centre of this piece of metal, and iskbent upwards through a hole in the buckle, which, when the buckle is closed, fits closely down against thebuckle, allowing the bevelled longitudinal catch to enter the s lot in the piece of metal and hold the belt.

To more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the drawings accompanying this specication, and forming a part of the same, in whichv Figure 1 is a front view.

Figure 3 is an end sectional view.

A represents a belt-buckle, having on the under side the bevelled lip or catch B, which' projects at an angle, and has its upper portion iled olf, so as tov present a sharpedge to the belt. bar, C, turns on a shaft, and has its bearings at each end of the buckle. This piece of metal is provided with a longitudinal slot, a, through which one end of the beltpasses, wheniit is doubled back and fastened.A Projecting from the centre of this piece of metal'or bar C, is an arm or lever, 6, which is bent upwards through the hole D. This arm h at its end, and a slot underneath, which its closely downupon the buckle when it is closed.

as a head To use my buckle, the belt, after having one end fastened to the slotted bar C, is passed around the waist,- and the opposite end passed through the sauie opening through which the other endlwas1passed,land ,drawn asv desired,- when, by pressing the lever 6 with the linger, untilit shuts down close upon the buckle, the longitudinal lip is forced through the opening in the slotted bar C, and presses against the belt,'thus holding it securely without piercing the belt with holes. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a belt-buckle, the bevelled projecting lip B, ira-combination with the slotted bar C, rotating on its axis,V

as shown, and operating the lever 6, the whole constructed and arrangedsubstantially as and for the purpose described.
