TO ALL WHOM IT` MAY CGNCERN Be itknown that I, S. P. BURDICK, of the city, county, and State of New York,rl1'ave invented a new and useful Improvement in Buck-lcs; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full,`cle`ar, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the aceompanying drawing, forming paltof this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of this invention,

This invention relates to a buckle, which 4is provided with a cam extending clear across the width of the belt, and secured to an axle, one'eud of which forms a lever, in combination with a stop and` catch formed by projections on the edge of the shell or body of the buckle, in such a manner that when the belt. has been passed through the buckle it is fastened by depressing the lever between the 'stop and catch, and said belt can thus be fastened at any desired point, Vno holes lbeing required to receive-the tongue of the buckle. i

The cam-shaft is-also provided with a lip at the end opposite the lever, said lip beingmade to catch over the edge of the shell, and preventingthe cam-shaft from being .forced out -tow-ard the stop and catch..

The front end of the shell of thebuckle is vprovided with a Harige projectingdownwardgand out outin the middle, in such a manner, that by the cavity in the dangle, .the endet' the bleltis brought in a. central position, and by the Hangs itself said end .is depressed and prevented from sticking up.

A represents the shell or body of my buckle, which is made of Asheet metal or any other suitable material, and which forms the bearings for the shaft a. This shaft is provided with a cam,a, which extends clear across the width of the shell,- and .atonejend of said shaftalcver, 1b, is formed, while .its-opposite end forms .a lip, o, as clearly shown in iig. 3'of the drawing.

i The lever works close to one s ideof the shell, and on this side is formed a catch, d, and a stop, e. When the lever is depressed it drops over.tlle'catt'zh witha snap,'and then it bears up against the stop e, so that it is retained, and prevented from moving spontaneously inv either direction.

The lip c catches over the opposite edge of the shell, and prevents.A the shaft being-forced out in a, longitudinal direction by the action of" the lever b and catch d.

` The shell A may be strengthened by lugs or ears, f, (snee iig. 3,) which project under the shaft a und cam a', and enable said cam to take a firm hold of the belt or other article passing through the buckle.

The front end of the shell A. is provided with a ange, g, which projects downward, and which is hallowed ont in the middle, (see tig. 2,) se that when a belt is passed through the buckle, the end thereof, on striking the concave part of the fiange g,is.condueted .to the centre of the shell, and by the flange itself the end of the belt is depressed, as shown in tig. 1, it being very `awkward in some cases it`.the end of the beltis permitted to stick up, which it would be liable' to do'without the flange. i

When the belt has been passed through the shell to the required "point, the lever is turned -until it strikes the stop e, and by this action the cam is broughtvto'bear on the belt, andclamp the same {irrnly between its edge and the shell, and by means of the stop and the catch the lever and the cam are retained, Vso that thelbelt canvnot be drawn through the shell in either direction until the cam is thx-owned?. i v

Where a..cross-belt is used, or where the buckle is made adjustable on such a belt, a guide o1" loop, is attached to the'undcr surface of the shell A, as shown'in tig. 5.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire `to secure byl Letters Patent, is`
