To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. FISHER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following vto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in buckles and more particularly to such as are adaptable for use with a strap to be worn as a belt, or with a trunk or other binding strap,-the object of the invention being' to provide a buckle of the type specified, which shall be simple in construction; cheap to manufacture; which shall be strong and durable, and which shall be easy to manipulate.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view.

l represents the rectangular frame of the buckle provided between its ends with a transverse bar 2 and at a point near one end with a transverse bar 3.

Upon the transverse bar 2 (which is located approximately in the center of the frame l), two members 4-5 are hinged. rl`he member 4 consists of a piece of sheet metal bent upon itself and provided between its ends with a connecting portion 6 which embraces the intermediate transverse bar 2. Between the parallel portions of the member 4, one end of a strap 7 is secured, preferably by means of rivets 8.

The hinged member 5 is provided on one edge with teeth 9 to form a clamping jaw and at the opposite edge, said member 5 is provided with tongues which are bent to form sleeves l0 embracing the transverse bar 2 at respective ends of the connecting portion 6 of the parte of the member 4. The member 5 is also provided, between the sleeves 10,

with a tongue 1l projecting under the transverse bar 3 and terminating at its free edge under the member 4 a short distance from the hinge-support of said member 4.

One end of the strap 7 being secured to the member 4 as above described, the other or free end of the strap will be passed through the slot l2 formed by the transverse bar 3 and one end of the frame 1. The jaw or member 5 will then be pressed down so that its teeth will bind the strap against the ad- `jacent end of the frame 1,-in which position the member 5 will rest upon the transverse bar 3 and its toothed or engaging edge will be disposed in a plane slightly below that of the frame l and securely fasten the strap to the buckle. The free end of the strap may then be passed over the members 4 and 5 and between the member 4 and the adjacent cross-bar of the buckle. When it is desired to release the free end of the strap from the buckle after having removed said free end from between the member 4 and the adjacent cross-bar of the frame 1, it is simply necessary to ress the member 4 downwardly so that it will engage the free edge of the tongue 1l of member 5 and thus turn the latter so as to raise it from the transverse bar 3 and thus release its toothed or engaging edge from the strap.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-

l. In a buckle, the combination with a frame provided with a cross bar, of two plates or members hinged to the cross bar, one plate having a serrated or toothed free end, and provided at its opposite end with a tongue which projects beneath the other hinged plate, substantially as set forth.

2. In a buckle, the combination with a frame provided with a cross-bar located below the plane of the frame, of two plates or members hinged at their inner ends to the cross bar, one of the plates having a serrated or toothed free end, and provided at its opposite end with a tongue which projects beneath the other hinged plate, substantially as set forth.
