ROBERTA. HEGGIE AND EDWARD A. WAGENER, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK.
EAR-RING FASTENER..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,238, dated November 8, 1881.
Appiimuonniea August 8,1881. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that we, ROBERT A.'HEGGIE and EDWARD A. WAGENER, citizens of the United States, residing at Ithaca,in the county of Tompkins' and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Ear-Rin g Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
Our joint invention relates to improvements in ear-ring fasteners, the nature and objectof which are to attach and secure the ear-ring to the lobe of the ear without piercing the ear; and also to attach and4 secure the ear-ring to the ear which is pierced, at the same time holding the drop or setting in proper position. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1- represents an enlarged vertical section of the whole of the lower portion of the device. Fig. 2 isa vertical section ofthe cont cave disk which clamps upon the lobe of the ear. Fig. 3 is a full-sized drawingot the `ear, with the fastener and ear-ring attached. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the ear-ring and fastener entire. Fig. 5 represents two ditl'erent t cross-sections of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. V6 is a surface plan of the disk represented in Fig. 2, showing the rougliened concave surface. l
Similar letters refer to similar parts througl1- out the several views.
The manufacture of this invention consists ot' abent-wire arm, e, as shown in Fig. 4, terminating in a disk, f, and attached to the bentwire arm d by a rivet-joint, c, which bent-Wire arm d also terminates in a disk, g. The barrel b, with a slotted end, turns about a part of the bent-wire arm e and allows the bent-Wire arm d toassume the position of the dotted line d', and the barrel b, by being turned to its proper position, clamps the disks f g se curely to the lobe of the ear. The ange t is for the purpose of attaching thesettingor ornament. The eye n is used for attaching a pendant and for turning the barrel b. The slotted end ofthe barrel b, between the slot j and the eye a, is wedge-shaped, s o as to press outward against the lower end of the bent-wire arm d, below the rivet-joint c, Working in the manner of an eccentric, thus forcing the upper or disk or disk end of the bent-wire arm e and 'holding it securely in its place. The barrel b, at the end next the arm e, is notched, so that the barrel b cannot be turned in either direction fartherthan aquarterot'acircle. The metal pin h, fastened in the inner center of the .concave disk j', passes through theear which 'is pierced, meeting a shallow hole in the inner center of the concave disk g, thus more securely fastening the ornament to theear and retaining it in proper position by the aid of the disksfg, which clamp upon either side of the lobe ot' the ear. v
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an ear-ring, the barrel `b, adaptedto turn, and having an eccentric and slotted end next the bent-wirearm d, shown.
2. In an ear-ring, the barrel b, notched at one end, as set forth.
3. The concave disk f, adapted to hold in position a removable metal pin, h, iu combination with the concave disk g, provided with a shallow hole in its inner center, adapted to receive the end of the pin, as herein described and shown.
as described and ROBERT A. HEGrGrIE.`` l EDWARD A. WAGENER.
