UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon.
WILLIAM E. GREENE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN EAR-RINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,092, dated July 1, 1879 application filed December 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. GREENE, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Earires, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detailed parts.
The object of my invention is to form afastening to be attached to ear-rings that may be easily adjusted to the ear and firmly fastened in their places, and with little or no liability of catching into the hair or clothing when worn in the ear. This I accomplish by bendin g a suitable-length piece of wire at right angles from near its center, one portion of which is made straight; the other is formed on a curve, so that the extreme end of the curve may be on a parallel line with the straight end B, as represented in Fig. 2. At the curved end of said wire I form a pivot, on which the lower end of the fastening-bar A is swiveled, it being provided with a hole at the end for that purpose. (Represented in Fig. 3.) Bar A being made of a flat piece of metal, the upper end is constructed with a notch or recess in its center, and with inclines from the two edges to said notch, so that when said end is turned against end B and pressed with sufficient force, end B is made to slide up the incline and spring into the notch, thus securely fastening the two together, it being so arranged that barA swings on a plane at right angles inside of the outer end, B.
To open the fasteningga required pressure is brought against bar A, which bar may be turned either Way from end B. (Represented by dotted lines in Fig. 1.)
By the use of my invention ornaments may be attached to the ear with less difficulty than by the old Way, and with less liability to accident of being disconnected while in use or wear. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bent wire B, one end of which forms the axis of an arm, A, arranged to swing upon the same end at right an gles with said wire, and which arm is notched to engage the free end of said wire B to form the fastening, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM E. GREENE.
