SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,608, dated August 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. BLOOMER, of Oranston, in the county of Providence and State of Ithode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Studs and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to that variety of studs or buttons which have a bent arm rigidly attached to the stud-head and a fellow arm secured to a swinging plate, which is hinged in such a manner that its arm may be made to overlie the rigid arm, for the purpose of conveniently applying the stud, and so that the said plate will lock the two arms in alignment after the stud has been applied.
The object of my invention is to facilitate and cheapen the manufacture of this variety of studs and to furnish a more stable article than has heretofore been made.
To these ends my invention consists in dispensing with the comparatively expensive pin or hinge joint heretofore employed for pivoting the locking-plate to the stud-head and'employin g a member forming a part of the stationary arm or separately attached to the head, which memberis bent at its rear end to engage and form a fulcrum for the locking-plate, as will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the drawings, Figure-l represents, in perspective, a stud embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 shows, in perspective, the stationary arm and fulcrum member combined and Fig. 3 represents, in perspective, the movable arm and locking-plate.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the arm B issecured to a perforated plate, I) b, the said arm and plate constituting the movable member of the stud. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the arm 0 is provided with a base member, 0, whose end 0 is bent to form a shoulder, 0 and partially encompass the portion b of the plate 1), thereby forming a pivot for the said plate and its arm.
The arm (J and member 0 are preferably made from one piece of stock by bending a piece of wire at right angles and flattenin g such bent portion to form the member 0, then producing the bend o, with its shoulder c on said member, and finally bending the wire and cutting it off to form the arm 0. The said arm and member 0, however, may be separate pieces, each secured to the head A.
In mounting the arms B O c the pivotal por tion I) of the locking-plate is inserted into the bend c and the arm 0 c is secured tothe head A. Instead, however, of completely forming the bend 0 before the locking-plate is combined therewith, the shoulder c on the member 0 may be formed and said member secured to the head, then the locking-plate beinserted and the portion 0 bent over to pivot the plate.
When the parts are mounted in position the distance between the shoulder c and the face of the base of the arm 0 is slightly less than the width of the perforation in the lockingplate, so that when the arms are brought into alignment to lock the stud the side of the perforation in the plate opposite the pivotal por-- tion I) will engage the said face of the arm 0 and securely hold the arms in a locked position.
The locking-plate b b is entirely of one piece of metal, and is readily and securely hinged to the head by the member 0. The stud, therefore, is much more durable and less expensive than when the hinge-joint is composed of two sections of hollow wire soldered to the plate, a third section soldered to the head, and a pin employedv to pivot the plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stud, the combination, with the head A, stationary bent arm 0, and a fulcrum member,c, secured to the head and havinga shoulder, 0 as described, of a movable locking member composed of a bent arm, B, secured- .to engage the base of the arm 0 and lock the arm B in position, substantially as set forth. 2. In combination with the head A, the arm B, provided with the perforated locking-plate b. and the arm 0 c, secured to the head and having its end 0 bent to form the shoulder c and pivot the said plate, substantially as de scribed and shown.
