HINGE-JOINT FOR JEWELRY.

SPECXFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,391,dated January 19, 1892.

Be it known that I, DEWEY F. ADAMS, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinge-Joints for Jewelry; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.

This invention relates to a hinge or pintongue joint for breastpins and other articles of jewelry; and it consists in certain features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to produce a hinge-joint member which can be sold to jewelers for application to breastpins, &c., and is adapted to be easily attached to the body of such an article and to receive a T- shaped pintongue, the said member being composed of a single piece of stock.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows in perspective the hinge-joint member which is to receive the T-shaped pin-tongue and is to be secured to the body of the article of jewelry. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the same from the opposite side. Fig. 3 represents in perspective the blank from which such hi ngejoint member is made. Figet shows in perspective a pin-tongue adapted to be combined with said hinge joint member. Fig. 5 shows a breastpin with the hinge-joint member attached thereto and the pin-tongue combined therewith.

The blank a from which the hinge-joint member A ismade is shown in Fig. 3. It is punched from a flat piece or plate of metal and has a main portion a, which is provided with two holes I) and a nose a projecting from one of its sides. To produce the mem-. her A, Figs. 1 and 2, from this blank, the ends or wings 8 9 of the blank are bent upwardly on the dotted lines at and y, respectively, Fig. 3, until they stand diverging upwardly from the base 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the holes I) Z) being at such a distance from each other when the bending is completed that the head or cross-bar c of the pin-tongue O can pass down between the wings 8 9 and into the pivotal holes I) l). The nose a is bent upwardly at right angles to the base 10 to furnish a fulcrum or rest, against and upon which the pin-tongue C will bear beforeits free end can enter the keeper D of the article of jewelry, so that the resiliency of the pin will hold it in the keeper in a well-understood way.

In combining the hinge-joint member A with a breastpin, as E, Fig. 5, the said member is seen red to the breastpin, as by soldering the base 10 of the member to the breastpinback. The cross-bar c of the pin-tongueis then passed down between the diverging wings 8 9 of the member A and into the holes I) b, when the wings are pressed or bent toward each other until they are substantially parallel, as

shown in Fig. 5, thereby pivoting the pintongue to and holding it in connection with the member A. If desired, however, the pintongue may first be combined with the member A and then the member be attached to the breastpin.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The improved hinge-joint member A herein described, formed from the blank or and havinga base 10 for attachment to an article of jewelry, wings 8 9, which are bent and diverge upwardly from said base'and have the holes I) b located at such distance from each other as to allow the insertion therein and be tween the wings of the cross-bar or head of a T-shaped pin-tongue, and the nose a bent upwardly from one side of the base 10, substantially as described and shown.

2. The combination, with aT-shaped pintongue, of the hinge-joint member A, formed from the blank a and having a base 10 for attachment to an article of jewelry, the wings 8 9, bent upwardly from said base and having the pivoted holes b b, which receive the ends of the cross-bar or head of the pin-tongue, and the nose a bent upwardly from the base 10 and furnishing a fulcrum for the pintongue, substantiallyas described and shown.
