To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OSCAR M. DRAPER, of North Att-leborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-0hain Tips, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to ornamental links or tips for watch-chains; and the object of the invention is to so construct the tip that it may be connected to the chain in a durable and yet simple manner.

The invention consists in the provision of an ornamental tip formed by drawing the stock in dies, the said tip being provided with openings or holes, into which the connectingring is passed; and the invention further consists in the combination, with the tip, of an ornamental disk secured to the tip by burnishing the edge of the latter over the edges of the former.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will now proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a frontelevation of a watch-chain with my improved tips applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the tipsecured to the swivel end of the chain. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the tip secured to the swivel end of the chain. Fig. 4 is a vertical crosssect-ion of the tip secured to the cross-bar end of the chain.

In the said drawings, A designates a watchchain, and B B B"B designate my improved tips. Heretoiore the tips have been secured to the chain by solder; but the use of solder for such purposes is very objectionable, and it is the purpose of my invention to dispense with its use as far as possible. The tips consist each of a cup-shaped device one side of which opens. The rims or edges of these cups are made with two apertures, b 6, into which the ends of a ring, 0, are inserted, and the ends of said ring subsequently brought together. The rim of the tip is also formed with one or more apertures, I), which are de; signed to receive the chain-links, as shown in Fig. 2. The rims of the tips are also formed flaring-that is, the diameter of the back of each tip is less than the diametric distance from one front edge to the opposite front edge.

0 designates an ornamental disk which forms the front or face of the tip. This disk is secured within the open side of the tip by burnishing the edges of the rim over the edges of the disk, as shown at .r as, Fig. 4. The flanges w a: prevent the disk from falling out of the tip, and said disk is prevented from falling inward by the inward slant of the flaring rim.

In the drawings, Fig. 2 shows the tip provided with only one aperture I), into which the end link of the chain is inserted. Fig. 3 shows the tip provided with two apertures, b b, oppositely disposed, through which the chain is passed. It will be evident that the number and relative positions of the apertures b may be considerably varied without exceeding the scope of my invention. In any event the links are retained in the tip by soldeer or other similar means. This arrange ment is applicable to slides as well as tips.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new therein and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved tip for watch-chains, consisting of a rim provided with a pair of apertures arranged to receive a ring and to hold the same without solder.

2. An improved tip for watch-chains, copsisting of a rim provided with a pair of apertures arranged to receive a ring and to hold the same without solder, and provided also with one or more apertures to receive the chain-links.

3. An improved tip provided with a flaring rim having apertures to receive a ring and to receive the chain-links, in combination with a disk secured in the open side of the tip by burnish'ing, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a watch-chain, of the tip formed with the flaring rim having the apertures b b, the ring 0, and the disk C, secured to said tip by the burnished portion a: x, the said chain being secured within the aper- F. B. BYRAM, F. I. Banner.
