CHAIN-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chain-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in clasps, and more particularly to an improvement in clasps used for securing articles of jewelry, such as chains, necklaces, or similar articles.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a chain-clasp whereby a strong and durable clasp is constructed without the use/.of solder.
A further obj ect of my invention is to reduce the cost of manufacturing a chainclasp having a shell forming the body of the clasp, an eye secured to one end of the shell, and a spring-snap having an eye and detachably secured in the opposite end of the shell.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a chain-clasp, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is an enlarged face view of the clasp, showing the clasp in the closed position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken lengthwise through the clasp with the clasp in the closed position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken lengthwise through the body of the clasp with the eye and snap in the position for assembling, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the snap-blank.
In the drawings, a indicates the body, b the fastening-eye, and c the detachable spring-snap, of my improved chain-clasp. The body a is in the form of a cylindrical shell having a closed end 5, in which is a central hole 6, forming an internal annular ledge 7, and a closed end S, having a central hole 9, forming an annular lip 10, as shown in Fig. 3. The eye is constructed, (in the form of a split pin,) preferably, of round wire, bent to form a ring 1 1, having the outwardly-extending shank ends 12 12, as shown in Fig. 3. The spring-snap c is stamped from sheet metal (having a spring-tongue) in an elongated form, as shown in Fig. 4, folded centrally and shaped to have an arm 13, on the end of which is an eye 14, and a spring-arm 15, on thel end of which is a button 16, offset from the arm, and in the outer face of the arm adjacent the button is a notch 17, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The eye b is secured by inserting the shank ends 12 12 through the hole 6 into the body a and bending the ends at right angles against the annular ledge 7, as shown in Fig. 2. The snap c is detachably secured to the body a by forcing the arms 13' and 15 of the snap through the lhole 9 until the annular lip 10 snaps into the notch 17 in the snap. By
pressing on the button 16 the notch 17 is released from the lip 10, and the snap may be easily withdrawn from the body of the clasp.
In the construction of a chain-clasp without solder a harder and more durable metal may be used without the metal being softened by the heat generated in soldering, thereby lengthening the period of wear and life of the clasp.
It is evident that the body a of the clasp could be of any design or configuration desired without materially affecting the spirit of my invention.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clasp composed of a body having a closed end and an eye secured to its opposite end, said closed end being formed with a central aperture forming an annular inwardlyeX tending lip, a spring-snap composed of an integral elongated section of sheet metal of equal thickness throughout, said metal being folded centrally to provide two spring-arms of equal length normally having a V-shaped space between their inner faces, one'of said arms being formed at its outer end with an enlarged portion of circular shape having a central annular eye, the other arm at its outer end being formed with a right-angular offset and with an outwardly-projecting circular button of concavo-convex form, said button being of substantially the same size as said enlarged portion of the first-named arm and directly overlying said portion, said second-named arm being formed with a notch at a point directly adjacent said offset to receive said lip, said button and said enlarged portion presenting two spaced parallel nger-grasps which are of equal length and eX- tend in approximately parallel planes.
