ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,505, dated April 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BABBIIT, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chains; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,forming partof this specification.

This invention has reference to an improve ment in the class of ornamental chains made up of spiral wires interlocked, so as to form a flexible band; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction by which the ends of the two adjacent spiral wires are secured together and protected, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a view of a'bracelet made up of the ornamental chain constructed after my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of a piece of the chain. Fig. 31s an enlarged view of the chain, also showing one of the spiral wires of which it is composed. Fig. 4. is an enlarged View of two adjacent and interlocked spiral wires,with theends protected and secured together.

Ornamental chains composed of interlocked spiral wires are usually made up of wire of inferior metal, covered by a tube of precious metal. The edges of such chains expose, therefore, the interior'of the wire, and such edges soon turn black, injuring the appearance of thechain. The cut ends of thespirals, forming the edge of the chain, form a rough edge,

liable to catch in any wearing-apparel, and also liable to injure the wearer in handling the same.

In the drawings, A is the chain, composed of a number of interlocked spiral wires. a a are the spiral wires, and B B arecaps constructed in any suitable form, so as to cover the ends of two adjacent spirals and form the edge of the chain. These caps are secured by solder or in any other manner, so as to cover, protect, and unite the ends of the wires. The use of these or similar caps obviates all the defects heretofore existing in such chains, and makes the same as ornamental and useful as the best quality of roller-chains, while in durability they exceed chains of any other construction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the spiral wires a a, of the caps B B, constructed to cover the ends of the spirals, as described.

2. An ornamental chain composed of interlocked spiral wires, the ends of each pair of which are covered by a cap, which forms the edge of the chain, as a new article of manufacture.
