ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,966, dated February 21, 1882.

of a central blank of cheap metal, a band of gold or gold plate covering the edges of the blank, and side pieces of plates of gold covering the sides of the blank, all of which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an ornamental chain embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 represents one of the links with its parts separated and shown in perspective.

Fig. 3 represents an enlarged transverse section of one of the links.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, A represents a box-link embodying my invention. In making said link I form a blank, 2, of German silver or other suitable cheap metal, of the general form which the link is to possess, the preferred form being oblong with rounded ends andrectangular in cross-section, the width of the blank being greater than its thickness. 7 I provide an endless band, 3, adapted to cover and fit closely upon the edges of the blank, said band being preferably composed of gold plate with the gold side exposed. To the ends of the band 3 are rigidly attached eyes 4. at. After the band is in place upon the blank I apply to the sides of the latter plates 5 5, of gold, which are of such size as to cover the sides of the blank and the edges of the band 3. The band and plates are secured to the blank by solder.

It will be seen that by the employment of gold plate for the band 3 and gold forthe plates 5 5, and by forming the gold plates 5 5 so that they will cover the edges of the band 3, as well as the sides of the blank, the basemetal sides of the blank and the base-metal back of the gold plate of which the band is made are entirely covered by the gold, and a sufficient thickness of gold is presented at the corners of the link to enable them to wear a long time without exposing any of the base metal. The gold plates can be ornamented by engraving as well as it the link were made of solid gold. v

The box-links thus formed are connected to form a chain by ordinary links, 6, as shown in Fig. 1. If desired, the links may be made of different sizes and forms in the same chain, as shown in Fig. 1, in which every alternate boxlink is elongated and the others are circular. The same construction is employed in both forms. chain may be constructed in the same manner; but instead of having an eye attached to each of its ends, itwill have a single eye, 8, attached to one edge.

1 do not limit my invention to the manufacture of chain-links, for it may be practiced in making pendants or charms for chains and for other articles of jewelry which are liable to be exposed to view on either side. Neither do I limit myself to the use of gold plate for the band 3, although I prefer it for its economy. The band may, however,.be made of gold, like the sides, if desired. It the band be made of gold, it is not material whether the plates 5 overlap its edges or not, since the band will have no base metal to conceal.

I claim-- 1. An ornamental chain-link or other equivalent article of jewelry composed of a blank of cheap metal, a band of gold or gold plate covering the edges of the blank, and plates of gold covering the sides of the plate, as set forth. 2. An ornamental chain-link or other equivalent article of jewelry composed of a blank of cheap metal, a band of gold plate covering the edges of the blank, and plates of gold covering the sides of the plate and the edges of the band, as set forth.
