Specification ot Letters Patent.

Application filed Anglian, i921. semaine. 491,563.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. Kinn-INEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bead Chains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lan improved construction of ornamental bead chain or fabric used primarily for personal adornment, but which may be used for any other purpose for which it is adapted; and the object of this invention is to provide such a chain or fabric with two or more spaced apart rows of hollow beads, the beads in each row being also spaced apart and links being provided for connecting the rows, and also for connecting together the beads in each row.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view illustrating a portion of a chain constructed of two rows of hollow beads by flat links of different shapes and sizes.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a strip of flat stock from which the links may be formed.
Figure 3 is a detail showing one of the beads with an opening through which the neck of its link extends, the latter being shown in section.
Figure 4 is a view showing the general shape of a connecting link which joins the diierent rows together; and also joins to.
gether the beads in each row.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates a spherically-shaped bead which is formed hollow being preferably drawn up from sheet stock, the same being'provided with diametrically opposite holes 11 through either side thereof. The links 12 are preferably formed of sheet stock and made somewhat in the form of the letter I having cross bars 13 joined by the connecting bar 14 and each of these cross bars is provided with a head 15 which is loosely inclosed within the hollow ball 10.
This I-shaped link may be embellished in any suitable way to render it as ornamental as desired, the inner edge 16 of the head portionsirof the link being preferably rounded off to approximately fit the inner surface of the bead so as to have no sharp corners engaging such inner surface, as the head moves about within the bead.
In assembling the parts these links are first cut or stamped into the required shape from sheet stock and after having been suitably ornamented the chain is assembled by closing the beads in each row over the heads of each link thereby providing a plurality of spaced apart rows or hollow beads and the beads of each row are spaced apart all of which beads are connected together by the links thereby forming a flexible chain which may be used as a bracelet for the wrist, a girdle for the waist, a fob or neck chain and it may also be used as a sprocket chain or for any other purpose for which it is adapted.
As the links are stamped from sheet stock they readily lend themselves to being highly ornamented and they also may be cut or stamped into a great variety of shapes for ornamentation.
I do not wish to be restricted to the forming of two rows of beads as any number of rows may be formed and connected by the links to form a fabric.
A. chain or fabric of my improved construction is very simple and inexpensive to manufacture and readily lends itself to a great variety of forms and shapes which make a chain or fabric very handsome and attractive in appearance.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Abead fabric comprising in combination a plurality of spaced apart rows of hollow beads the beads in each row being spaced apart, and" links having heads inclosedY in i Qa Y Leie-,sai
row and also the lieads in each row, and cross bars for maintaining` said rows in spaced apa-rt relation.
3. A bead chain comprising in combination a plurality of spaced apart rows vof hollow beads, the beads in each row being spaced apart, and links being formed of Hat stock with heads thereon inclosed in adjacent beads connecting said rows: and the beads in each row, said links having an enlargedfbe'dyportion adapted to receive ornamentation.
Il. A bead chain connorisingin` combination a plurality of spaced apart rows of hollow beads the beads in each row being spaced apart andk links formed in substantially shape having heads on the cross bars loosely inclosed in the adjacent beads of each row, the connecting` bar of each linlrserving to hold the different rows in spaced apart relation.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature.
CHARLES P. KUEHNER.
