TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that we, HOWARD M. THOMPSON and CHARLES W. BURBANIQ, of Alfred, in the county of York, and `State of Maine, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Press-Boards for the Use of Tailors or others; and we do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following speciiication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes a top view,
Figure 2 a side elevation, and Y Figure3 a longitudinal section of the invention as applied to a. table.
In carrying out our invention, we combine with a common vpress-board a means or mechanism for snpportf ing it over the top of a table, and clamping it thereto. Our invention also includes su'eh means as arc operated by the graviteting-power of the board, and by the pressure which is exerted on the'board while it may be in use.
In the drawings, A denotes a table, and a tailors pres-board, such as is generally introduced into the leg of a pair of pantaloons or. the sleeve of a. garment, to enable a person to press down with a flat-iron or tailors goose thet folds ofthe seam. i
The said press-board rests on the top of a standard, C, erected on a base-board, D, at or near the middle thereof. The said press-board extends underneath a-at-arm, E, which is pivoted to the opposite edges of the standard bymeans of two projections, a a, and by a screw, b, going through each of them, and being screwed into the standard. A l
A clamp-jaw, F, hinged to the base-board, at or near its outer end, extends underneath the table-top in manner as represented, and is connected with the arm E by means of a rod, c, such rod being hinged orjointed to the clamp-jaw, and extended up through a slot, d, made in the base-board.
` The connection-rod'has a screw, e, cut on it, which goes through the arm E, and receives a nut, f, arranged on the top of the said arm.
By forcingV the ,press-board downward, the arm E will be raised, so as to draw the clamp-jaw close up to table-top, and'at thefsame time press the base-board down upon such top. Thus, it Willibe observed, that the i weight of the longer part of the press-board which extends from the standard, together with a pressure on such part, will operate to clamp the board in position on the table.
The purpose of the screw e and nutf is to enable the press-board supporter to be adjustedto boards and table-tops according as they may vary in thickness; also, to adjust the press-board either to a horizontal position, or such an inclination as circumstances may require.
We claim the press-,board supporter `substantially as described, that is, as .composed of the base-board D, vthe standard C, the arm E, and the clamp-jaw F, connected in manner so es to operate as explained.
We also claim the combination and arrangement of the adjusting-screw e and nutf with the connectionrod c, tbe clainp-jaw F, the base-board D, the standard C, and the arn E, arranged and combined substantially inman'ner endif-or thefpurpose as specified.
We also claim the combination of the pressfboard B, and mechanism, substantially as described, for supporting it above, and fixing or clamping it to u. table, as explained, such mechanism consisting of the basehoard D, the standard C, the arm E,.the clamp-jaw F, and the vconnection-rod c, or their mechanical equivalents.
HOWARD M. THOMPSON, CHARLES W. BURBANK. Witnesses:
