IRONING BOARD GLAMP. No. 275,275, Patented Apr. 3, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. ROSS AND JAMES F. BLISS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
lRONlNG-BOARD CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 275,275, dated April 3, 1883,
Application filed January 16, 1883. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY W. toss and JAMES F. BLIss, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Ham pden and State of Massachusetts, have in vented new and useful Improvementsin Ironing-Board Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device adapted to be quickly adjusted and clamped to a table or other support, to furnish in its turn, when so fixed, an adjustable means of firmly supporting an ironing-board; and it consists, in brief, of a metallic frame having two independently-adjustable clamps to receive, respectively, the edge of the supportingtable and the edge of the ironing-board, and provided with cam-levers to bring said clamps to a bearing.
This invention is fully illustrated in elevation in the accompanying drawing, in which B is a metallic frame having at right angles thereto the rigid jaw surfaces 0 (3, and affording therein hinges for the movablejaws l) I) and levers H H. The jaws D D, in the general form of angle-levers, hinged below the fixedjaws O C at e e, have their lower ends, I) 1), formed into bearing-surfaces for the ends of levers H H, and their upper ends into nuts for the stems of adjustable clamp-surfaces d d. Said screw-stems and nuts enable the relative distances of the jaw-surfaces d d from the end of levers D D to be varied. The levers H H are formed with cam-heads, and are hinged in the frame B at h h, shown, to, when in one vertical position, permit the ends b b and connected ends having clampsurfaces (Z d to swing their maximum distance from the fixed jaws O G, and when in the 0pposite "ertical position have their cam endsbear against the ends I) b at or near a center, so that the surfaces d d will be forced by the cams against any boards interposed between them and the fixed jaws, and locked in that position.
In the drawing, dotted lines indicate the position of one lever, H,when swung to release the swinging jaw I), and the cam-lever H is clearly shown bearing against the surface b to operate the movable jaw D, a portion of the frame B being broken away to expose the camhead of the lever and the spacein the frame in which the end b is free to swing when released by said lever. Upon an upright terminal, m, of the frame B is socketed an iron-holder, M, removable at pleasure, and in convenient reach of an operator at the ironing-board.
In operation the swingingjaws D D are approximately adjusted to the thickness of the table 0 and board P by means of their set surfaces d (1, so that when the cam-heads of the levers are swung to be on a center the jaws D D will forcibly oppose the jaws G G to firmly clamp the intermediate table and board, the extreme end of the ironing-board P being clamped, as shown, firmly to resist any lateral or longitudinal movement. The interposed support L, arranged from the table to the board, near the clamp, firmly supports the board from any vertical motion, and leaves its end from the clamp free to have any article to be ironed introduced over it, which, like a pillow-case or similar circular garment, can only be ironed to advantage when inclosing the board.
Now, having described our invention, what we claim is- The frame B, the fixed jaws G O, the swingingjaws D D, having the adjustable clampsurfaces d d and bearing ends I) b, the camlevers H H, and means, as L, for supporting the board near the clamp-frame B, all combined and arranged substantially as shown and described, and to form a device for independently clamping table and ironing-board.
