IMPROVED BENCH OB. TABLE.

KNoW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That I, L. D. HUBBARD, of the city and county .of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain newand useful4 Improvements in Wash-Benches and Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,'refercnce being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective viewof my improved bench or table.
Figure 2 represents a bottom view of the same when folded up for transportation, or when not in use, and
Figure S'represents a section on line A B, fig. 1.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I'will proceed to describe it more in detail. y
In the drawings, the part niarked A is the top of the bench or table, havingcross-piecesB B, fastened to the under side, and to which the legs C C C C are hinged, asjfnlly indicated in the drawings. The legs, at each end, are connected near the bottom by a cross-piece, D, in one ot' which is a hole or recess, a, while a slot, b, is made in the other. E is the extending arm, employed, as shown in igs. 1 and 3, for the purpose of keeping the legs in proper positions while the bench or table is in use.
It will be observed that the upper ends c c of vthe legs C C, project above the hinges e e e e, so that when the legs C C are turned ont, as shownin igs.1 and 3, the ends c e strike against the sides of the pieces B B, and thus thclegs, when the extending bar or rod E is applied, are retained in firm and secure positions.
When the bench or table is to-be folded up, the c nd of the bar or rod E in the slot b isv elevated from saidv slot, and then the other end is drown from thefhole or recess a, when the legs can be folded up to the under side of the top, A, als shown in g. 2.
A hook, d, may be attached to the under side-of the top, A, to be hooked into an eye, f, in one of the crosspieces, D, (see fig. 2.) Holes are made in the cross-pieces B B, to receive the extending rod E, when the legs are. folded, as shown in iig., 2.
I t will thus be seen that bymyimproveinents, large wash-benches and tables can be quickly folded, so as to'occupy comparatively but a small space, while,- when in use, they stand quite as iirm as if made in the ordinary manner with rigid legs.
It is unnecessary to speak of the great advantages of suoli a bench or table, where room is restricted or limited, as it is in a great proportion of shops and dwellings.
My tableA or bench has been tried, and its great utility and practical value are admitted by all persons who have given the invention a trial or careful examination. 1
Having described my improvements in wash-benches and tables, what I claim as new, and of iny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I i Anvash-bench or table, in which the cross-pieces B, hinged legs C, removable extending arm' E, and hook and eye, or equivalent means for holding the'said legs ina folded position, are combined and arranged relatively to each other in the manner and forthe purposes herein shown and specilied. I
L. D. HUBBARD.
Witnesses: I
Tiros. I-I. Denon, D. L. MILLER.
