Description

L@uiten taten @einem @Him CALVIN H. PAINE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIM.-
SELF AND GEORGE S. THOMPSON, THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 78,992, dated' February 4, 1868.
IMPRovBD CARRIAGE-JACK.
dige rlgemle mettre tryin their Estera tfent ant 'making am nf tige sans.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE 'PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, CALVIN II. PAINE, of the city and county of Providence, and State-of Rhode Island, have invented 'an Improved Carriage-Jack; and I do hereby declare the same' to be fully described in the following specification, and 'represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a. front, and
Figure a rear elevation of it.
Figure 3 is an edge view of it.
In suoh drawings, Adenotes a standard or' post, erected on :ibase-board or plank, B. Against the front face of the post A is a ber, C, heldv to the standard by means of screws, ct a, and washers, Zz b, the said screws going through slots, e e, made in the post, the whole beingso as to allow the bar C to play or slide vertically.- against the post. The said bar has a 'series of heles,ff, made in it from its edge. A pin, g, connected with the bar by means of a chain, h, is to be placed in either ofrsuch holes. A lever, D, arranged with respect to the standard and bar, in manner as represented, is jointed at its endvto a toggle, E, Whose lower end is hinged to the base-board. The lever is also connected to the bar by a joint-pin, z', the. saine being so that when the longer arm of thelever' is in theact of being raised, its shorter arniand the toggle will operate as a pair of toggles dr knuckle-joints, to leiect the elevation or forcing upward of the bar. y
In using the jack, the pin g' is to be placed underneath the axle of the carriage to be raised, when'the bar is in its lowest position. This having been donc, it will only be necessary to pull' np the longer arm of thelever, in order to eiect the raising of the axle. The pin may be provided with a brace, m, to extend from it, and against the bar, in manner as represented, such being to support the pin, or prevent'it from being bent under the weight of the axle or carriage.
One great advantage possessed by this jack is, thatrthe power applied to operate its lever acts upon its longer arm, so as to lift it. This enables manual power to be applied. with the best useful effect. K When the lever is in its highest position, it will be'about in lin'e with the toggle, which, by bringing up against .the standard and bar, will retain the bar in its elevated state.
I claim the arrangement and combination of the lever D and toggle E, with the slide bar C and the baseboard B, applied to the standard A, substantially as specified. i
I also claimv the pin g, as made with` the brace or arm m extended from it as set forth.
CALVIN H. PAINE. Witnesses:
