WILLIAM'D. vwiNairn, or LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, AssiGNoii 0F ONE-HALF To Divin c. sounERs, or LANcAsrER, PENNSYLVANIA,
l l l i TOY.
Be it known that I, WILLIAMD. WINGER, a citizen of the United States,^residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania,`have invented a new and useful Toy, of which lthe following is a Y speciiication.
This invention relates to toys, and has for. its object to produce a simply-constructed` and easily-operated device which may be inexpensively manufactured and will amuse Y and interest children.
With these and other obj ects in view, which will'appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment'of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation,
it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limitedthereto, yas vario us changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts maybe resorted to without departin from the rinciple of the invention or sacri cing any oflits advantages. In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fi 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the cylindeig'whistldand plunger. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating the construction ofthe plunger or piston head and the manner of 'coupling to' the piston-rod.
The improved device comprises a stockor bar 10, having a handle 11 at `one end and a wheel 12, mounted for rotation, at the other end. Connected to the bar 10, as 4by brackets 13 14, is a cylinder 15, with a whistle 16 at one end and open at the otherk end. A connecting-rod 17 is pivoted at 18 to the wheel 12 and extends into the cylinder 15 and terminates at its free end ina loop 19. Rigidly connectedto the` rod 17 next to the loop 19,l as by soldering, (represented at 21,) is a concave plateV 20, and slidably engaging the loop 19 is a-similar concave plate 22, the concaved faces ,of said plates beingdisposed toward each other for engagement with a packing-disk 23,` of rubber or similar iiexible ma- Specification of ietterslatent..

shown. l A wedge-key 24 is inserted into the loop exteriorly of the outer plate- 22 to bind the three parts firmly together. By this simple means a very eflicient piston member is produced which-will closely engage the interior walls of the cylinder when moved therethrough and forcibly expel the air through the whistle member when moved in one direction and draw the air through said whistle when moved in the opposite direction.
terial, interposed between said plates, as-
.- It will be obvious that as the device is Vtrundled over the lgroundv the rotation of the wheel 12 will actuate the plunger and cause the whistle to sound twice during each revo'- lution'of the wheel and will operate equally as well whether the wheel be drawn over Athe ground or pushed over the same, as it is immaterial in which direction the wheel is moved, as the whistle will be sounded regardless of the direction of motion. l
The device maybe .of any size and con-V structed of any suitable materials and can be very cheaply manufactured, as willbe obvious.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 7 1. vA toy of the class described comprising a handle member having a wheel mounted .for rotation at one end thereof, a cylinder seone end provided with a whistle, a rod pivotally connected with the wheel and having its free end disposed within the cylinder, a concaved plate attached near the free end of said rod, a seccured to said handle and 'having rod and spaced from the iirst-named plate, a flexible disk interposed between said plates and engaging the interior walls of-the cylinder, and means carried by the rod for`retain-- ing the plates in engagement with*v said disk.
2.v A toy of the class described comprisin a handle member having a wheel mounte kond concaved plate slidably mounted on the for rotation at one end thereof, a cylinder connected to said handle member and having oneend thereof open and its opposite end provided with a whistle, a rod pivotally connected to saidwheel and having its free end disposed within said cylinder and terminating in a loop, a 'concaved plate attached near the free end of the rod, a-second concaved IOO plate slidably mounted on said rod and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as spaced from the first-named plate, a flexible my own I have hereto affixed my signature disk interposed between said eoneaved plates in the presence oi' two Witnesses.
and bearing upon the interior Walls of the VVILLIMI D. VVINGER. cylinder, and a Wedge-shaped key engaging W'itnesses:
said loop and slidable plate for retaining said J EANETTE R. LONG,
plates and flexible disk upon the rod. CHAs. E. LONG.
