Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
CHARLES BENEDICT AND O. R. FYLER, OF WOLCOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUIDES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,466, dated August 25, 1868.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES BENEDIcT and O. R. FYLER,v of Wolcottville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gages for Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Whichl Figure 1 represents an inverted plan view of a gage for sewing-.machines constructed according to our improvement, illustrating the groove and under side of the iiange. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal view of the same as it belongs on the machine; and Fig. 3 represents the edgewise view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a novel construction of a gage for sewing-machines, whereby to understand the construction and operation of p our invention, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
The gage A is provided with the usual longitudinal slot s through its center for its attachment, by means of a screw, to the clothplate of the machine. This frame A is provided on one extremity with a curved guiding edge or face, in which is provided a groove, o, in or through which passes the edge of the cloth or other material. On the upper side of this groove c is a iiange, b, for the purpose of lapping over the edge of the cloth, and retaining it within the groove c, and preventing it from oversliding the gage during the operation of sewing. Near the central portion of this flange b is provided a notch, a, for the passage of the needle when it is necessary to set the gage very close, such being the case in taking very narrow hems.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is
The gage constructed with a curved groove and hanged face, substantially as herein described.
