IMPROVEMENT IN RUFFLING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 101.446, dated April 5, 1870.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. L. 1301:, of Kutztown, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Rnflier and Puffer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in attachments to facilitate the rufflin g and sewing of one piece of fabric upon a plain piece; and consists in attaching to the presser a yoke, and introducing therein a flat spring connected to the arm, and provided with an adjustingscrew, all so arranged that the ruffling will pass through the said yoke under the spring, which may be made to bear with more or less force upon the strip which is to form its hand, and thereby regulate the extent of the gathering of the other strip acted on by the feed, and which passes under the yoke.

Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved attachment. Fig. 2 represents an elevation at right angles to Fig. l, and Fig. 3 represents a plan of the same.

A is the presser-arm, provided with a socket at the top and set-screw for attachment to the presser-post, and intended to be adapted in shape and size for attachment to the post of any machine.

To the end of this arm I connect the presserplate B or yoke, which rests upon the cloth at right angles to its line of movement, and so that while the cloth moves under thepresser, in the usual way, the piece to be ruffled or puffed will pass through the yoke under the spring, and to the needle working at the rear side of the said yoke.

D is a flat spring, connected at one end to the arm A and curving down under the same, so that the other end passes through the yoke at the open end, and bears, nearthe said end, down upon the npperface of the p resser.

E is an adjusting-screw, screwing against the springs between the two ends in a way to cause more or less pressure upon the spring and so that it can becansed to hold the strip to be rnffled with more or less force, as is desired. .c

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent- The combination, with the presser-artn A,

of presser plate B, extension-yoke C, flat spring D, and adjusting-screw E, all shaped,

arranged, and fastened together as and for the purpose specified.
