NVENTU? .Zwan M12/Zz ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, V190e.
Application filed February l, 1905. Serial No. 243,695.
To @ZZ whom t muy concern.-
Beit known that I, AUSTIN M. HILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rockville Center, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to buttoners; and its object is to provide a new and improved button-holder more especially designed for engaging the base or back of the front collarbutton of a shirt to project the outer end of the collarbutton forward to permit the wearer to conveniently button the collar to the collar-button without requiring much physical exertion on the part of the wearer.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the inventionis represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement, partly in section and shown applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the head of the holder with a button engaged thereby, the button being partly in section.
The handle A of the button-holder terminates at one end in an integral shankB, onv
which is secured or formed a head C, preferably in the shape of a disk, having its front face provided with a recess or seat C for receiving the base or back of a front collar-button D at the time the latter is in position on a shirt E, immediately previous to buttoning a collar F to the said collar-button. In the bottom of the recess C is a central depression C2 for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
In using the device the operator first buttons the collar F in the usual manner at the rear or neck button and then to the collarbutton D at one side, and then the operator takes hold of the handle A and inserts the shank B and head C between the throat of the wearer and the shirt-band with a view to engage the base or back of the collar-button D with the recess or seat C', as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The operator by now pressing on the handle A causes a forward projection of the collar-button D, so as to enable the operator to readily button the other flap of the collar F to the projected forward end of the collar-button D without re uiring much physical exertion on the part of t e operator.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the shank B extends at an angle to the handle A, so as to bring the head C in proper relation to the collar-button base without requiring the operator to throw the head back to make room for the handle A. The back of the head C and the shank B are preferably rounded off, so as to permit convenient insertion of the parts between the wearers throat and the shirt, as previously explained.
On the peripheral edge of the head C is formed a reaming -lug Gr for conveniently opening the buttonholes of the collar previous to engaging the buttonholes with the collar-button.
The handle A may be of plain or fanciful design or it may bein the form of a shoehorn, a comb, a button-hook, or similar article. For instance, as shown in the drawings, the handle A is in the form of a shoe-horn and can be used as such. The depression C2 in the bottom of the recess C of the head of the holder receives the central projection d, sometimes found on the base or back of collarbuttons and particularly bone buttons, as
shown in Fig. 3, so as to permit the button to i be firmly seated in the recess.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture a holder for collar-buttons, consisting of a handle, a reduced shank, an approximately flat diskshaped head on the shank and having inl its front face a shallow circular recess with a central depressionfor receiving the base or back of a collar-button, and a reaming-lug on the peripheral edge of the disk opposite the handle, the handle standing at an angle to the shank, being inclined in direction of the recessed face of the head, whereby provision is made for inserting the shank and head between the throat of the wearer and the shirtband so as to engage the back or base of the collar-button with the recess of the head to hold the same and thereby facilitate the buttoning of the collar to the collar-button, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture a holder for collar-buttons, comprising an approxi- IOO TIO
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
