Patented Dec. 11, 1923.

SNAP BUTTON.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1922.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SaMonAITIs, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Dover, county of Piscataquis, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in buttons, particularly shirt studs or the like, consisting of head and socket part, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a bi-partite button of this class, the parts of which can be quickly and conveniently united if the stud is to be fastened to a shirt front or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a button of this type which is extremely simple and therefore inexpensive and which is extremely durable and eflicient.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known, as the description thereof proceeds and willthen be fully pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Figure l is a front elevation of a button orstud constructed invention partly in Figure 2.
Figure 2 is, a bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 3 shows'in bottom plan view. and in section on line 3-3 a saucer plate.
Figure 4 illustrates in detail views a clamping or snap member.
The button principally consists of two parts, a soc et member and a button part provided with a shank l1 and crown setting 12 for the reception of a precious stone 13 or the like. The member 10 has a foot part 1% to hold suitably a bottom or base plate 15,
and a vertically and upwardly extending.
hollow shank 16 having its lower end suit ably extending through foot part 14:, and a small saucer-like plate 17 against the inner face of which the end of shank 16 is ham- .iered or otherwise secured thereto.
The shank 11 of the button part extends through the plate 17 and a central opening 18 in the same and its lower end is formed with a neck part 19, and a knob or head 20. The plate 17 is provided at opposite points according to the present section on line l-l of Serial No. 570,843."
with recesses 21 to form bearings for the ends of a spring clamp 22, the shanks of which i Y I are guided around the neck part 19 above knob or head 20 which enters a depression 23 in the base plate 15.
The device operates as follows- If the troduced into the shank of the socket, and pressed inwardly, the head at the lower end of the shank will spread the clamping'bars 22, which will close behind the the neck part of the shank and same, while the head is entering sion in the bottom plate. It will be clear that a pull on the crown will cause the head to be withdraw again through the shanks of the clamping member which will be securely held within the socket, and recesses of the saucerplate by the bottom plate.
Changes may be made in the general conengage the struction, arrangement of parts and conibination of elements without deviating from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
The upper end of shank 16 carries a flange 24 on which the crown 12 rests. Vhat I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States is In a button of the class described, a perforated socket member having a foot part, a recessed perforated saucer-like plate in said foot part, a hollow shank extending upwardly from said socket, and having its lower endcrimped to hold said plate in said foot part and its upper endfianged, a crown for holding a precious stone, a shank secured to said crown and extending hollow shank, a neck end of said shank, a depressed base plate for said socket, a head at the neck part of said shank, said member allowing a ready withdrawal of said head and shank'from said socket, and is adapted shank of the head or crown is inhead over the 'depresg downwardly into said formed near the lower to be firmly held in the recesses of said saucer plate between socket and bottom plate.
In testimony whereof I'have affixed my signature.
JOSEPH SIMOKAITIS.
