PATENT OFFICE.
' RUBE ROBERT FOGEL, OF NEW YORK, ,AND.WILLIAM BOURKE, OF
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,856, dated January 19, 1904.
Application filed July 29, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUBE ROBERT FoeEL, a resident of Manhattan borough, in the county of New York, and W'ILLIAM BOURKE, a resident of Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-' Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a button embodying our said improvements looking at the front face of the button-shoe. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of said button looking at the rear face of said button-shoe. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the button, the button-stem in this view being shown in section.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the respective views of the drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in devices of that class known as buttons, and particularly such as are generally employed for retaining purposes in connection with cuifs, neckbands of undergarments, collars when applied to such neckbands, and various other articles.
The object of this invention is to provide a button of the character above indicated which shall be simple, inexpensive, and novel as regards construction, which shall embody certain novel features of construction relating particularly to the assembling of the shoe and stem thereof, and which shall possess certain well-defined advantages over prior analogous devices.
The invention consists in the employment of certain new and useful peculiarities of construction, in the novel disposition and relative arrangement of the parts whereby the attainment of the aforenamed objects is rendered practicable, and in certain combinations, all of which willbe specifically referred to hereinafter, and set forth in the appended claims.
The button herein described is one wherein the base or foot is made of mother-of-pearl,
Serial No. 70,032. (No model.)
ivory, or other material separate from the shank, and a dlfliculty has always been experienced in such buttons in connecting the shank solidly and firmly to the base.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, 2 indicates the base or foot, of a slightlydished contour and having in the center thereof an opening. l
3 is the stem or shank, which is made solid except at its connecting end, Where it is tubular and provided with an annular rib 4, formed by folding the metal on itself. The end of the tubular part of the shank projects below this rib to pass through the opening in the base 2, this end being slightly longer than the thickness of the base, so that after the base is placed in position it may be expanded outwardly and downwardly upon the base, thus forming an annular lip 5. This construction, while forming a firm and rigid connection with the base or foot, also protects the edge of the opening in the base from chipping, which if the base be made of mother-of-pearl it is liable to do unless protected. A suitable head is formed upon the end of the stem or shank.
.Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination in a button with a solid shank, a tubular end on said shank, and an upset or fold forming an annular rib around said tubular end, of a base or foot pierced for the reception of the tubular end, the said shank end being expanded down on the outside of said foot to hold it firmly against the said annular rib and prevent the base from chipping, substantially as described.
2. A button having the solid shank 3, the tubular end on said shank, the annular rib 4: and the separate base 2, the base 2 being held in contact with the rib 4, by an expansion of the tubular end forming a lip 5, substantially as described.
R. ROBERT FOGEL. WILLIAM BOURKE.
