Be it known that we, ADoLE S. LUNDBERG and FRITZ L. LUNDBERG, citizens of Sweden, and residents of West Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusettsh ave jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Studs or Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sleeve and collar buttons or studs of that class in which hinged arms are employed for securing the button or stud in its applied position, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly shown in section, of the improved button, showing the hinged arms folded one within the other for the introduction of the same through the buttonholes. Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an edge view similar to Fig. 3, showing the hinged arms spread open after beinginsertedthroughthe buttonholes. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line 5 5 in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 4., partly shown in section. In the drawings, A represents the buttonhead, which may be made of any desired size, shape, or material, as usual. To the head A of the button is secured in any suitable manner a shank B, of spring metal, doubled on itself and having a cut-away portion at its lower part, thus forming the eyes b Z7, to which the spring-arms are pivoted.
C and D are the two arms for securing the button in position. Said arms are made of U-shaped spring metal and constructed so as to allow one, the smaller one, C, to fit within the larger one, D, in alinement with the shank when the button is inserted, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5. To hinge the said arms to the circular expansive spring-metal eyes of the expansive shank, the smaller arm C is provided with outwardly-projecting square trunnions C C', and the larger arm D is provided with similar inwardly-proj ecting square trunnions D' D', adapted to be inserted into the expansive eyes b b of the divided expansive shank B, as shown. The yielding expansive shank B and its eyes h b serve as a frictional clamping device for holding the square trunnions C/ C and D D' of the pivoted arms C D in their adj usted positions, either in alinement with the split expansive shank B or at right angles thereto, as circumstances may require. To frictionally secure such trunnions in position relative to the shank is the object ot' the invention, and for such purpose the shank is cut away, thus forming two expansive and laterally-yielding eyes within which the square trunnions 0f the arms are hinged and adjustable.
We are aware that devices of this kind have been made in which a solid non-expansive shank has been used in connection with arms pivoted to said solid shank, and We desire to state that we do not claim such a device as our invention; but
WVhat we desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim isl. A stud or button comprising a head, a shank portion connected thereto and having its free end formed with a pair of spring-eyes, an arm, square trnnnions integral with said arm and adapted to extend within the said spring-eyes at the inner side thereof and frictionally engaged with the inner face of the said spring-eyes, an arm, square trunnions integral with said arm and adapted to extend within the said spring-eyes at the outer side thereof and frictionally engaged with the inner face of the said spring-eyes.
