To (Jo/Z 1117001 11 it may concern- Be it known that we, OTTO F. LIDKE and Geoncn SEYMOUR, citizens of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of \Vashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fenceposts.
The object of the invention is to provide a post having means whereby the line-wires of the fence may be adjustably connected to the same at different horizontal planes.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be applied to any form of fence-post.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence-post constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the adjustable wire-attaching devices. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of a portion of the post, showing the construction of the same on an enlarged scale.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the fence-post, which may be formed of any suitable material and which may be of solid or hollow construction. The post 1 is provided with a coarse screw-thread 2, which extends from its upper to its lower end, as shown. 7
On the post 1 is arranged a series of collars 3, each of which is provided with an interior thread 4, which is adapted to engage the thread 2 of the post, whereby said collars may be screwed up or down upon the same, thus permitting the collars to be adjusted to any desired position upon said post. Each of the collars 3 is provided with a laterally-proj ecting upwardly or downwardly and inwardly curved hook 5, with which is adapted to be engaged the line-wires 6 of the fence. The hooks 5 may, if desired, be formed of malleable metal, so that after the fence-wires have been engaged therewith said hooks may be bent inwardly toward the collars,-thereby same.
If desired, barbs 14 may be struck out of or otherwise formed on the post at intervals near the lower end of the post, whereby the same will be firmly held in the ground.
By the use of a post constructed as herein shown and described the line-wires of a fence may be spaced apart at any desired distance and may at any time be changed with very little trouble.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fence-post having formed thereon a spiral thread, adjustable ienceavire-supporting devices adapted to engage the thread on said post whereby the same may be screwed the fence-wires are secured to said supporting devices, substantially as described.
2. A fence-post having formed thereon a screw-thread running from the top to the bottom of the post, collars having an interior thread formed thereon to engage the thread on said post whereby said collars may be shifted up and down on the post and wireattaching hooks formed on said collars by which the line-wires of a fence may be attached thereto, substantially as described.
3. A fence-post having formed thereon a spiral thread, adjustable fencevire-supporting devices adapted to engage the thread on said post whereby the same may be screwed up or down on the post, means whereby the fence-wires are secured to said supporting devices, and means whereby the post is firmly held in the ground, substantially as described.
4. A fence-post having formed thereon a spiral thread, adjustable fence-wire-supporting devices adapted to engage the thread on said post whereby the same may be screwed locking said wires into engagement with the up or down on the post, and means whereby up or down on the post, means whereby the set our hands in presence of two subscribing fence-wires are secured 100 said sg upporting de- Witnesses.
