A Posts; and I PATENT oEEIoE.
RICHARD TITSWORTH, OF FORT BLISS, EL PASO, TEXAS.
FENCE-POST.A
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RICHARD TITswoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Bliss, El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fencedo declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersA skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence posts, and one of the principal objects of thesame is to provide a fence post `which may be used either in connection with line wires, for a wire fence or with pickets for a picket fence.
Another object is to provide simple and efficient means for anchoring the post; and still another object is to provide means for securing a pipe rail along the top of the fence.
These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence post made in accordance with my invention g Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the is a side elevation of the post and anchor when used as a corner post or a gate post.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention the numeral 1 designates the post which may con.
sist of a channel-iron bar, a tube, or a metal' post of other contour in cross-section. Secured to the lower end of the post is an anchor 2, said anchor being preferably'reduced in the center and the post being secured to said reduced portion by means of lugs 3 extending through the reduced central portion of the anchor, whereby the anchor is held securely against accidental slipping or sliding. The enlarged ends 4 of the anchor may be flanged or bent at an angle to the base portion, as at 5. The post is provided with a series of notches 6, for securing the line wires thereto and doubled wire loops 7 hold the line wires in place, as shown. An adjustable anchoring device comprises a metal plate 9 having braces 10 secured thereto and adapted to slide upon the post, said braces being secured by bolts 11 passing through the post and through any one of a series of holes therein. This anchoring device is adapted to rest upon the top of the ground and is adjusted to compensate for the depth at which the anchor is placed under the ground, or it may be placed under the ground on top of the anj Specication of Letters Patent. Application led June 14,

chor 2 or at any point tween said anchor 2 and the top of the ground. The reduced cut-out portion 5 in the fianges 5 provide for the reception of the I adjustable anchor and for the holding thereof against lateral movement.
hen it is desired to use the post for a picket fence, Wooden strips 12 are secured at suitable points uponl the post by means of bolts 13 passing through the strips and through the posts, as shown. To these strips the pickets are to be fastened by nails or other suitable fastenings. At the upper end of the post an eye 14 is secured by means of a bolt 15 or other suitable means. This eye fits within the hollow post and serves as a strengthening means at the upper end thereof, and the ring at the top is extendeda sufficient distance and is internally screwpermit the pipe rail to be secured to each post by turning the threaded end of the rail Into the ring.
When the post is to be used as a corner post or a gate ost, the anchor a, shown in Fig. 3, may be engthened at one end, as at to provide means for supporting the brace c connected at one end to the post d, and at its opposite end to said lengthened portion of the base, as shown in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that when the fence post is inserted in the ground at the required distance, the adjustable anchor may be adjusted to press upon the top of the ground and hold the post firmly in place, said adjustable anchor extending at right angles to the anchoring device at the lower end of the post.
Variousv changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of constructlon may be resorted to without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,-
1. A fence post having longitudinally spaced apertures extending transversely therethrough and having a stationary anchor, another anchor extending laterally at right angles to and adjustable relatively to said stationary anchor and operable in conjunction therewith to clamp said post in position, brace arms extending from said adjustable anchor, and bolts adapted to pass through said arms and through one of said intermediately bey stationary anchor, 'and said adjustable anA ehor having braces provided with means for adjustably connecting theni to the post.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set l5 my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD TITSVVORTH.
