Description

(No Model.)
0. W. BOSTON. CHIMNEY PROTECTOR.
No. 490,536. Patented Jan 24, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORREN W. BOSTON, OF DAVID CITY, NEBRASKA.
CHIMNEY-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,536, dated January 24, 1893.
Application filed May 2,1892. Serial No. 431,403. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORREN W. BOSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at David City, in the county of Butler, State of Nobraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chimney protectors and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap protector which can be quickly applied to a chimney, easily adjusted, formed of parts readily separated, and provided with a cap piece which depends within the chimney to prevent the bricks from falling inward and down the chimney.
Other objects and advantages of the iuven tion will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a substantially central vertical section through my improved chimney protector in position around the chimney which is also shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the parts comprising my protector, separated.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both of the views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main body portion of the protector which may be of any material suitable for the purpose, preferably galvanized iron or some analogous metal which will not rust, and this body portion is provided with a flange a at its lower end designed to rest upon the roof A of the building and this body portion and its flange may be varied to accommodate it for a flat or a pitched roof as indicated in Fig. 1 by full and dotted lines. This body portion is made to fit around the chimney B and may extend upward for any desired distance.
0 are rods which extend parallel with the chimney upon the outside thereof and between the same and the body portion A as seen in both views; these rods are of suflicient length to extend beyond the cap-piece of the protector and are screw-threaded as seen at c for the reception of nuts 0' the purpose of which will soon be explained. The lower ends of these rods are turned at an angle to their length as seen at c to engage beneath the rafters D to which they are secured in any suitable manner, as for instance by screws 01 as seen in Fig. 1.
E is the upper portion of the protector; it is made of the required height and its lower end is designed to slip over the upper end of the body portion A as seen in Fig. 1; it is formed at its upper end with an upwardlyextending flange over which the cap-piece is designed to fit as seen in Fig. 1. This portion E may be made as ornamental in appearance as may be desired, one form of ornament is seen in the present drawings.
F is the cap-piece, it has a depending surrounding flange f to embrace the upwardly extending flange e of the portion E and its top is provided with holes f for the passage of the upper ends of the rods 0; it is formed centrally with a rectangular or other shaped collar F as seen best in Fig. 1 which is designed to fit within the opening or bore of the chimney as seen in Fig. 1 to prevent the bricks from falling within the chimney.
In practice the body portion is first applied in place, the rods 0 being placed in position and their lower ends secured to the rafters, the portion E is then slipped over the chimney and over the upper end of the body portion and then the cap piece is applied and finally the nuts 0 are screwed upon the upper ends of the rods and the parts drawn together and firmly held. The parts may be easily adjusted to suit different heights of chimneys; the exterior of the chimney is protected from the rain and storm and the bricks are prevented from falling down the inside.
part and their upper ends passed through the cap piece and provided with adjusting nuts, as set forth.
2. The chimney protector described consisting of the body portion with flange at its lower end, the adjacent portion having flange at its upper end and its lower end sleeved loosely over the body portion, a cap-piece with depending flange to embrace the flange of the intermediate portion and a central depending collar to fit within a chimney, and screw threaded rods secured at their lower ends to some fixed part, passed within the body and intermediate portions and between the same and the chimney and through the cap piece and provided with adjusting nuts, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
