PATBNTED NOV. 7, 1905.
0. CARI-SON.
CORNER SHIELD 0R PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED IEB.14. 1805.

UNITED STATES PATENT onnion.
OLE OARLSON, OF DEKALB, ILLINOIS.
CORNER SHIELD OR PROTECTOR.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE OARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dekalb, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Shields or Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 'My invention relates to a simple article of manufacture useful for a great variety of purposes and primarily intended as a combined ornament and protector of a corner lot; and my object is to provide a simple though reliably efficient means whereby the corner of a plot of ground may be ornamented and at the same time protected against persons or animals passing over the same.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are considered a part of this-application, and in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention complete applied'to use. Figs. 2 and 3 show dilferent forms of anchoring devices which may be employed for securing my invention in its operative position. Fig. 4 shows means for attaching a part of the framework to the anchoring-post. Fig. 5 shows a removable top section for the corner or end posts. Fig. 6 shows additional means for securing the framework to the post.
Referring to the numerals on the drawing in which similar numbers designate similar parts throughout all the views, 1 and 2 show the end posts, which are tubular and are provided with the removable ornamental sections 3, each of said ornamental sections having a stem 1, designed to enter the open end of the posts 1 and 2, as shown in Fig. 5. Each of the posts 1 and 2 is provided with an anchoring member of any desired character, as the parts designated 5 and 6 in Figs. 2 and 3. I also provide corner-post 7, which is of substantially the same construction as the posts 1 and 2, excepting preferably longer, all of said parts being tubular. The ornamental terminal section 3 is also provided for the upper end of the post 7, and either form of anchoring members 5 or 6 is attached to the lower end thereof as may be deemed most eflicient and desirable. The posts 1 and 2 and 7 are connected together by the upper and lower sections, respectively, 8 and 9, and said Specification of Letters Patent.
A li ti fil d February 14, 1905- Serial No. 245,630.
Patented. Nov. 7, 1905.
upper and lower sections have disposed between them the interlacing members 10, the ends of which are connected to the upper and lower sections in any desired way.
The sections 8 and 9 are each provided on both ends with a split-collar-like terminal 11, having the cooperating flanges 12, designed to be brought together and secured by the bolt 13 or equivalent means, and it therefore follows that the members 8 and 9 may be secured in permanent relationship to the posts.
In Fig. i I have shown the collar 11 as provided with the lugs or extensions 14, adapted to be received by the end of the tubular sections 8 or 9, thus enabling said parts to be readily connected or secured together in their operative positions.
In Fig. 6 I have shown one of the rail-sections 8 as having permanently connected thereto the terminal or head 15, provided with the curved members 16, designed to [it partly around one of the posts 1 or 2, as the case may be, and this form of head 15 may be readily attached to the post by entering the screw 17 through the aperture 18 and into a threaded seat in the head, as will be obvious.
The various parts of my invention may be cheaply and expeditiously manufactured and readily assembled each in its operative position, and while I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts I desire to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes that may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a cornerprotecting appliance comprising a corner-post 7 and end posts 1 and 2, said corner-post being of greater length than the end posts, members 8 and 9 interposed between said cornerpost and the end posts, said members 8 and 9 being tubular, split, collar-like members 11 having lugs 14; adapted to receive the ends of said tubular members 8 and 9, flanges formed integral with said collar-like members 11, means cooperating with said flanges adapted to secure said collar-like members fixedly to the posts, and additional means to anchor said posts in the ground, all combined substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a post; of a split collar surrounding the post and having integral IQ ing the collars upon the posts, and integral lugs extending from the collars and projecting-into the ends of and adapted to support the tubular sections.
In! testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- I 5 scribing witnesses.
OLE OARLSON. Witnesses:
ELMER HEGBERG, CHARLES O. KLINE.
