IMPEOVBD BBD-BOTTOM.
@Us tlglehnle referrer it iu there @niet rimt :mit making nrt if the smite.
To ALL WHOM 'IT MAY coNERN:
Be it l nov vn'that I, BENJAMN GREGG, of Bennington, in the county of Bennington, and State of Vermont, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvementin Bed-Bottoms;. endl do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part cf this specification', wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional plan of said improved bed-bottom, two ofthe slats being partially removed, and one of the springs. f l 'Y Figure 2 is a vertical/longitudinal section of the bedsteadand improved bed-bottom; and
Figure 3 is a section ofthe metallic spring in larger size.
Similar marks of reference denote the'same parts.
The ebjeet'of this inventiostoifirnish a. strong, cheap, and reliable springlbed bottom,`that will yi'eldto the weight of the person,'but n'ot be liable te break under strain.
.My said invention consists in a. metallic plate;spr'ing, attached at its lower-end to the bedstead or frame, and projecting inward, with an inclination upward, and terminating as a. crotch er saddle, in which the slet lies, so that the spring will yield with aweight until the end of the slat itself rests upon the spring, near the point of attachment to the bedstead, so as to relieve the spring of further strain.
In the drawing, a a are the side rails, 6 b the head and foot-guards or boar-ds, the whole forming lthe frame for the spring-bottom, or the spring-bottom may he supported in a. separate frame.
e c c are the metallic platefsprings, secured at their lower ends to the framelr), by means ef the. clampingpieccs d, and the upper portions of said springs extend inward and upward, as shown, and'terminate with crotehes or saddles e e, into which the slats f/ g rest.
These saddles or crotchcs a may each be formed b y ears, turned up from projecting pieces 4at the sides of the strips of sheet metal forming the springs, or they may be made of separate pieces of metal, riveted uponthe ends ofthe springs, and bent up to form saddles for said slats g g.
v The springs c c will yield to pressure, and make a very comfortable bed-bottom, and, should the weight be such that the ends-ef the slats rest upon the springs near the point of their attachment to the frame b, the` leverage ofthe springs will cease, so that they will not be liable to be broken.
This bed-bottom isvery durable and yielding and is cheap in its construction. If desired, a' spring nlight be added beneath the centre part of each shit, hut this would seldom be required.
What I el` im, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is-.
The bed-bottom, formed of plate-spring c, attached to the frame b by the clamping-pieces d, and formed 'with the erotches or saddles c, at their moving-ends, receiving the slats g g, as and for the purposesspecied.'
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 3d day of June, A. D. 1868'.
